Nuremberg’s Christmas market is certainly one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany and in Europe. It is an old tradition, going back hundreds of years. Every year during a month this German Christmas market gathers hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world. The famous Christmas Market of Nuremberg is a must for every Christmas tourist.

What is the perfect Christmas holiday? To enjoy the moment in #Nuremberg and forget about your worries for a while. Whether strolling through the Christmas Market, enjoying medieval atmosphere in the Old Town or shopping individual gifts for your friends and family. If you are interested in culture, a visit to one of the many museums in town is a must. These are memories that will last a lifetime! [more…] Nuremberg Christmas Market – christkindlesmarkt.de

From a window of the Church of Our Lady ( Frauenkirche ) , an angel with flowing blond curls, a crown, and golden wings, appears above the Nuremberg market and proclaims: “the Christkind invites you to her market, and whoever comes is welcome!”

Tradition as old as 400 years, gets together over 2.000.000 people every single year around the Christmas. Instead of Santa Claus, there is a Christmas angel, and by their tradition, she is the one that opens and welcomes all the guests, but not only that, she has so much to do around these days. But first, a bit of history.

Nuremberg Christmas market : Nürnberg

The Nuremberg Christmas market – one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany.

Tradition says that a new Angel is chosen every 2 years. It’s always a young pretty lady, with a smile on her face, always ready to be with children and to try to listen to them all. She wears the same traditional gown, but, because the costume is made out of real gold, the stars on the gown are changed every 2 years.

When she opens the Nuremberg Christmas market, then she reads to the children and talks to them almost the whole day, gathering their Christmas wishlists, trying to promise them all to get what they want. She has her own charette with horses so that everyone can see her, no matter how long you stay, if you came here for Christmas activities, you’ll see her for sure.

Looking from above, from The Church of Our Lady, where the angels welcome you, the view is something else. Except for a lot of people down below the terrace, you can see red and white stripes which are covering the whole square, and streets around it.

Having in mind that so many people are coming, it’s not too much when you hear that there is about 180 stand that sells everything that is connected to the Christmas and this great town! Except that, there are international stands from Poland, China, Scandinavian countries, and also from other parts of the country.

Christkindlesmarkt is a Nuremberg Christmas market that is held annually in Nuremberg. It takes place during Advent in the Hauptmarkt, the central square in Nuremberg’s old town, and in adjoining squares and streets.

If by now you are not convinced, remember that this is the place to be for Christmas, and there are more than one reason why should you?

First, the smells, where everything smells like roasting almonds, gingerbread cookies in all shapes and sizes, bratwurst ( the Geman sausage ), and the traditionally prepared mulled wine, with its seasonings, ads a funny note to the whole story. The wine is cooked with cider, honey, cinnamon, star anise, and orange peel…and all that in one place, and in one hot mug.

Their gingerbread cookies are famous by having a lot of nuts in them, and that separates those cookies, from the other in different parts of the country.

The first one of the Christmas market was held about year 1628., from which there is a Christmas box in the National Museum of Nuremberg, and in it is still 12 silk skeins ( a length of thread, yarn or silk in this case, loosely coiled and knotted ), so at that time, it was celebrated.

Besides the decorations for the Christmas tree, there are so many things to find here, on the marketplace, and stuff to do that you have to go and see for yourself. For example, there are whole day children care, where kids can do all kind of stuff, from making things out of the glass to making cookies with elders to dipping candles into the barrels with colour, thus painting the candles themselves.

Beside those children, who got more time, can stay and make small houses, and decorating them, in Christmas children bakery, there is also the children post office, and a puppet theatre. Everything a child may need in this jungle of glitter.

The things that must be mentioned about this great gathering of people is that the Nuremberg’s Chrismas Market was moved around several times, from the Insel Schütt which is a small island on the river Pegnitz, to the Plato of the Museum of Applied Arts, then there was a movement to the Transport Museum, which had enough space in those days to get all people around.

There is a sentence from St. Sebald Church which says that Christmas sermon was cancelled in 1616. because everyone was on the Christmas Marketplace, so they had to change the date of the beginning of the Christmas Market. Today, the whole thing starts on the 4.th of December, so everyone can enjoy both Christmas Market and Church Sermon for the Christmas Eve.

From 1545. they got after the reformation of the Church, for the children of Nuremberg are having their presents from “Holy Christkind”.
In 1933. The Nuremberg Christmas Market was back on the main square, in front of the Church Of Our Lady, and since then its still at the same place.

Everything from ornaments, for the tree, to the Christmas Angel made by hand in gold leaves, can make a great present for you or for someone who you love, you’ll find just about everything here for your comfy stay there until you get back, you’ll feel like living in a fairytale.

If you like Christmas and enjoy festivities that are great, marry, shiny and traditional, you won’t regret deciding the City of Nuremberg for the Christmas holiday!

Things to do in Nuremberg & What to see in Nuremberg?

What to see in Nuremberg? This city lays over two rivers one of them is Pegnitz River and the other is which flows into the River Main. Even though it is the second-largest city in Germany, it is certainly the largest city in Franconia. This city not only has a great education system like the Univesity of Erlangen-Nuremberg, which includes a university teaching hospital and many others. 2006 FIFA World Cup was held here as well.

This city is famous for many things, but the Christmas Celebration and its main market are its trademarks. If anyone wants to spend Christmas in the best way possible, Nuremberg is the town to spend a few days to remember for the rest of their lives.

The Imperial Castle of Nuremberg is one of the main landmarks if the city of Nuremberg. Made in the Middle Ages, this beautiful castle represents the power of the Holy Roman Empire in its full glory. The first documents of the Imperial Castle were written in 1050. It was the place where people gathered and made tradings, and inside many of the rulers of the city and the Imperial Diets held trials there. On the northern side of Nuremberg’s Altstadt, everyone can see the full glory of the Holy Roman Empire.
It is a great place to start your tour of this city.

Albrecht Dürer’s House

The most important artistic thing to see is this place. Albert Durer’s house was renovated several times because it was damaged several times, and everything in it is as it was during his life. He was one of the greatest painters in Nuremberg, and everyone wanted him to paint for them, and most of them were the wealthiest and most important citizens of Nuremberg from those times.
He lived from 1471 to 1528. He became famous and started living in this house in 1509, in the 16th century.

Besides, this is the only house in Europe where the artist lived and worked hard, so in every corner of the house, there are traces of his life.
If you came here looking for art, this is the first place you should visit, because it still looks like it is the 16th century.

Germanisches Nationalmuseum

The main thing you should know that the underground is a cold place.
Schöner Brunnen, The Beautiful Fountain

When coming to Nuremberg, by yourself, or with the tourist guides, odds are that you will see this beauty as the first thing that is important in this city. This fountain is on the main square in Nuremberg, and it dates back to 228 B.C. After those times, to implement Christianity in Europe, people from the Christian Church made this fountain one of the most important works of art in Europe. Until the 16th century, everyone could touch the fountain and by doing it, they will peel off the colors and the silver and gold that was used to paint the fountain.

Fountain

Then comes the legend of the ring. The townspeople had concluded that in order to keep paint on the fountain, they will have to make a gate that will keep people away from touching figurines.
One of the people that made gates, who made the rings for the gate, had a daughter. She fell in love with a modest and poor boy, but her father forbids it. When he saw his daughter in pain and tears he promised that he will leave one ring on the gate loose, and if he finds the ring she could of mary him. He and his daughter left the town as soon as the gate was finished but the ring stayed.

Actually, this fountain has two rings, and most of the time people who come here make wishes for having children. As the story goes, if you turn the loose ring 3 times and make a wish the wish will come true. If you are visiting this beautiful city, be sure to look closely at the story of the fountain. You’ll get there for sure if you get to visit Nuremberg.

Iron Maiden of Nuremberg

Iron Maiden of Nuremberg was one of the hardest torture devices that were made for those who got the hardest punishment. The first written trace of this torture chamber was in the 19th century in Nuremberg.
It was a chamber made of iron, made for one person, with spikes inside, so one person that was in there couldn’t move or sleep, because you could be killed with the spikes of iron inside.

Nuremberg Trials Memorial

This is also, one of the landmarks of the city of Nuremberg. This is the place where the trials were held against the National Social Party that acted during World War II. From November 1945 to October 1946 most of the people that weren’t killed during the war or fled from the country were judged here. Mostly for the documentation that will be left after the trials. It was judged to 199 people and only one of them was acquitted.

International court worked in room number 600 in the Nuremberg building of justice. In this Memorial Museum, you can see all the transcripts that were written during the trial. The saddest ones were witnesses that went through the Holocaust. Almost every one of them had a number tattoed on their hands. Some of the leaders of the Allied Alliance like British prime minister Churchill and the Soviet Union’s Gorbachov wanted to kill them all but International Military Court wanted to judge all of them to leave the written trail so that war like this never happens again.

All of that can be seen in this museum which still works as the court of justice in the town of Nuremberg. This place is worth seeing for many reasons because it is proof that horrible things that happen from 1939 to 1945.

Every time of the year has its special things to see and do if you decide to spend a long weekend or maybe the whole holiday, go to Nuremberg, you won’t regret it.

The Rising of Nuremberg and Kaiserberg as its main Castle

More about palaces and castles

The Beginnings of Nuremberg as a town was preceded with The Law Makers. As a town of great value to those who could profit from it got large from the first day of its mentioning. The first books about the city were written in 1050. AC and the first mentions were about assemblies and first-class trading going around the city.

The Imperial Castle of Nuremberg was mentioned about the same time because it held assemblies od the Roman Imperial Diets. Imperial Diet was, in fact, the assembly of the Imperial Estates, which was the gathering of the most respectable figures of that particular area but with the ranks of The Holy Roman Empire.
Imperial Diets were in absolute power since 1663. when they felt that they are losing the battle from strong feudalists. They wanted all of the power and none of the responsibilities so in 1663. they formed Perpetual Diet at the Regensburg city hall. Formally, Diet lasted only to 1806. but the truth was that they left their mark everywhere where there lived Catholics, long after the 19th century.

The Imperial Diets were important and had a narrow history with this Castle in which all the assembly were held at the Kaiserburg as a part of The Holy Roman Empire at the time.
The Caste itself stands on the top hill of the city, and below it is a great sandstone rock from which anyone can see the whole city. The building of the Kaiserburg Castle was done in several stages. At first, there was a Stauffer Kings, which made a courtyard and the larger area of the top of the hill in which place will Castle raise the view for the best defence for the city.
The inner and outer courtyard was the real difference for keeping those in power safe and secure.
Here is why the Imperial Diets get importance because, from the beginning of the building, the castle’s purpose was to hold the important events in the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg. As they grew bigger, The Imperial Castle got bigger.

Hohenstaufens were the ones that keep on building the castle and the Roman Emperors, on top of the old buildings that were there once. Some of them are still visible to this day. Hohenstaufens was known today as a Royal Prince that was linked to the Roman Empire in some way ( usually through the blood ). Their job was to secure law and order, like today’s military, so they had to see above if someone wanted to attack the fortress. Also, the next in line to get the same job had to have the same qualifications as his predecessor, one of the Royal blood from Italian finest royals.
The Burgrave’s Castle was built for those who were bravest to keep the upper-class untouchable. In 1191. since the city of Nuremberg was the most important city besides being one of the largest, The Imperial Castle was being kept by Counts of Zollern.
It must be said that the city was growing fast all because the main roads throughout the whole of Europe went through Nuremberg.

The Imperial Castle of Nuremberg

It was the beginning of the real trading of everything anyone can find on the market places during the realm. This great town made itself on the crossroads of every road in Europe. Therefore on the market place were: amber, fur from al kinds of animals, usually came from Baltic, and the metals, rare or not, mostly came into Nuremberg from Hungary and countries around it. Among the metals were gold in the first place, then silver and copper was also a rare metal in those days. With other metal materials, they made swords, shields, and other weapons that were available for selling on the free marketplace. Merchants from all over lived like that, becoming richer, travelling from town to town to sell their goods. It mostly depended on the year but usually from the sweet words of the salesmen who could sell you anything with promises that their product is the best on the market, just like today.

who built the kaiserburg castle

Castle was built in stages, and by the 13th century, not two, but three Towers were thee all by the end of the century. The entrance is called The Heavenly Gate (Himmelstor), and almost a few steps away are the first, The Hasenburg tower named by the family that originated there. The second one is the Sinwell Tower that got its name from its looks, like a big cylinder looking to the sky. In the 16th century, they added to it hights and made a large shelter on top of the tower. Among the buildings that go back to the beginnings of making The Imperial Castle stands a small wooden house in which the well had water for the whole city. The well has its name, and it is The Deep Well (Tiefer Brunnen), and besides the 12th century in the 16th, some stones were added, but that was all as the well goes.
It goes 50 meters below the ground and held healthy water for all its users. At the end of the 16th century, the little house is made right beside the well, which was used for toilets, changing rooms, and cleaning purposes. The well still has water and its three meters above the sea level. The shortage of water was only when the assemblies were held in the castle. In those cases, the water was brought in barrels to have enough for all the members of the assembly.
In 1219. one of the most important letters was sent to burgraves directly from Emperor Friedrich The Second, called the Letter Of Freedom, meaning that from then on, the city of Nuremberg was officially becoming Independent Imperial City that took several years, but in 1254. the city finally got its independence.

HISTORY OF NUREMBERG

As was written in the beginning, the first archeological foundings were about 1000. and many of the noblemen through the ages, but also trough the castle were living good lives there some of them stayed for a while, but most important people lived there whole lives. One of many of its residents was the Hohenstaufen Conrad, who was elected King Conrad the Third, which was there since 1137. Before him, the famous Henty The Fith ruled until his death. Henry The Third before held all the area to himself, so the city was his property and the Kaiserburg was one of his homes. As elected successor Lothair was the last one who ruled this town before Hohenstaufen rulings.
When they came to rule, The Imperial Castle had his first blocks of stone, and from then on, something was always building and being done to keep the Castle in its best shape. All that will last until The Second World War, in which many buildings that were there for half a century were crash with bombs, and in less than 10 minutes, all the great works of art were lost, never to be found. I took many years to repair all the damage that was done with this work of art, and after the war was over, everything got restored, except the Ascension of Mary altarpiece (The Heller altar ), made by the famous artist Dürer which was destroyed in fire, and artworks like that cannot be replaced or copied to be exactly like the original was.

Dürer was one of the best artists in Nuremberg and was called for many works of art, from paintings, glass art, sculptures, and larger painted places like Churches, Chapels, and for those with deeper pockets, a private painter, and a great one, too. His realistic lines made his pictures like living people or the, for example, his most famous work Young Hare which is like a real bunny, scared, alerted, and ready to act.
Unfortunately, this painting now resides in Vienna, but Dürer made his impact on Nuremberg’s past, and everyone there knows about him.

Imperial Castle in the Middle Ages

The Holy Roman Empire decided in 1273. that with the election of the new king, Rudolf The First, he repeated the Burgrave’s wishes, trying to keep them in the high positions. Therefore, burgraves got a bit of power and were using those powers to add to Tower Sinwell, and that was the yeat that the Tower got its floor up and the place around it for summits.

After adding up to the Castle, burgraves got their fame back, and along with the city council, they improved the whole city, not only the Castle, which they were most interested in.
After their intervention, the city of Nuremberg got its fame all around, so much so that it became the city of the most important in the whole country, some say even in Europe.
Rudolf The First, held several Diets there, under the ruling of the Habsburg Monarchy and after the Nassau, Albert The First, and Adolf, as his successor many new buildings were added to the Castle, from which was mentioned The Sinwell Tower but ad to it Palas and the top floors of the Chapel Tower ( now known as The Heathens Tower ).
Later on, they decided that the Diets and Burgraves Tower needed more surrounding buildings, to keep safe the soldiers who were on the first line of defence, in front of the Burgraves’ Tower, they erected another Tower as an extra measure for safekeeping the leaders of the realm. For that purpose, they made The Luginsland ( literally meaning to look into the land ) all that in 1377. and since, they were safer with the Tower that reaches the furthest parts of the city.

One of the more important figures of those times was Charles The Fourth ( known better as The Golden Bull ), which proclaimed in 1356. that every new ruler that comes to the throne must get his or her new election in the city of Nuremberg. Frankfurt is the only other town where new kings and queens could be elected as a new ruler.
Later on, The Imperial Castle gets less and less used, because of the convenience of the households, but for the larger gatherings, The Imperial Castle was still number one, for more than several hundreds of people.
Frederick The Second appreciated The Castle and had a habit of staying there for several months, just like the Maximillian The First, who was the last king that ruled over The ImperialCastle, but his son fled from the Imperial Castle, running from the plague, and he returned there only once until his death in 1546.
After the plague and a pretty grim future in Europe, Nuremberg lost his importance. However, there was so much done in the early ages, that it didn’t need a lot of adding up for The Imperial Castle to finally look like we see it today. In about 1545. The Imperial Castle got its bastille, exactly two of them, on the Northern side of The Imperial Castle, so now The Castle could be defended from all sides. In time, wars got uglier, and there was practically no more need for defending only The Imperial Castle.
The war that lasted over 30 years had an impact on the whole of Europe, but since Nuremberg is in the middle, the army of Gustavus Adolphus and Albrecht Wenzel Eusebius von Wallenstein charged on the Imperial Castle many times. The ending was devastating for the larger number of soldiers, who died in front of the Imperial Gates from hunger and illnesses that should be prevented, like scurvy and typhus.
Not long after, Napoleon set his mind to the Imperial Castle, during his conquests around Europe the Treaty was signed named Rheinbundakte, which made it possible to get back the city and establish a Kingdome now known as Bavaria.

During the Second World War, Nuremberg was one of the cities that got most of the damage. Even if we can say that there were less ruined buildings of The Imperial Castle, it certainly lost some of the artworks lost forever. The first reconstruction was by Rudolf Esterer, who did his best to get things the way they were. But, as history says, all that was lost during the bombing of Nuremberg was reconstructed, but Nuremberg Museum working with the Bavarian Palace Administration made everything that was lost, visible again. In 2013. everything that was restored from the Imperial Castle made its way back into the museum, now just as a reminder of the past times. Back then, small decisions made a lot of difference, but the part of this great structure was lost forever.
Museum keeps values restored from The Castle as a reminder that those things should never happen to anyone on the planet.

Imperial Castle of Nuremberg Today

Before the guidelines, one of the things that matter is that The Imperial Castle, Kaiserberg, is now owned by the State of Bavaria, and for all questions, and answers, as well as the repairs, and other things are now in hands of local Bavarian administration, which is also responsible for the lakes and gardens around the Kaiserberg. Even though it is beautiful, someone needs to keep it presentable to the public. Their name for this administration is now still ( Bayerische Verwaltung der staatlichen Schlösser, Gärten und Seen ).
The important thing about this place is that you can not, as they say, just drop by, at any time, because the Kaiserburg, as one of the most important things to see when visiting this great city, is only opened on weekends.
So, if visiting Nuremberg, and get a weekend or just one day, try to get to see The Imperial Castle of Nuremberg.
It opens from 10:00h A.M. to 4:00h P.M., ONLY ON Saturday and Sunday.
It is located on Burg Street 17, and it is easy to come to it bu foot, and by bus, while the car renting is an option, you will see why it’s better to walk to see this monumental Imperial Castle. Friedrich-Ebert-Platz and Kaulbachplatz are both about 8 minutes walk to The Imperial Castle, and walking those minutes will be a fresh look for your eyes.
If the saying “Better to be safe than sorry”, is also good to know that in order to have your place at the time you are visiting, it’s better to book the tickets before, and the cancelling can be done 24 hours previous to the tour.
The ticket to visit it all is 8,00 Euros per hour so if you are guided, the price can be a bit more, but try to get as much time as you can, because it will be sad to wanting to stay there, where the whole town can be seen, like on the palm of one’s hand.
Also, for all those who want to stop and rest, because it is all on the hill, there are bars and restaurants very near, even some in the upper parts of The Castle, so enjoy your stay, and feel free to talk about this experience.
One important thing is that for now, there is limited access to the Castle Gardens, so there is no direct link from the Imperial Castle to the Gardens. If you want to see them, there is a way, “Ölberg” garden gate or the “Bürgermeistergarten” from Neutor will lead you right on The Most Beautiful Castle Gardens you could ever see.
With great Welcome, everyone is more than welcome there, to feel the millennium that passed and one great Imperial Castle still stands there, to remind us how to be better in the future.

Nuremberg Buildings & Monuments

1. Weißer Turm
Am Ludwingsplatz

Like the Laufer Schlag Tower, this is one of the few remaining parts of the penultimate city fortifications.
The tower was built in the mid 13th century, severely damaged in 1945 and reconstructed in 1977. It is a rare gate-tower, and its name literally means ‘ The White Tower ‘. It is surrounded by pedestrian streets, where you can find everything you need. In the middle ages, that gate was the only way to get in or out of the city.
Also, one of the characteristics of this tower is the clock on the top of the tower, and as a part of a network of clocks around the city, this one is listed as one of more complicated clocks. A great place to visit at any time of the year.
In front of the Tower is the architectural fountain named Ehekarussel, loosely called ‘The Marriage Carousel’, which is worth seeing. The sculptor made a fountain for the love circle goes around from the first look to the end of life.

2. Weißgerbergasse

One of the more or less famous streets, but certainly the street you should see. All of the old houses are still in their great shape because it seems that in this town people value their rich history, along with colourfull houses, made half of wood, and they are just amazing.
For those who love photography of the native people from this part of the world, very early in the morning, the pictures will look stunning. Along with other streets, this one too was demolished in the II World War but rebuilt very soon after.
Everything about this street will amaze you, especially if visiting from a big town. This street will show you how small buildings can make a great city, and how people of this area are welcoming.

3. Straße Der Menschenrechte

If you have enough time, be sure to visit this work of modern art. The whole structure was built in 1993., and translation of this landmark is ‘The Street Of Human Rights’.
Memorial sculpture, made in front of the museum of modern arts, by Israeli artist Dani Karavan. It took him about 7 years to find a suitable concept for such a large place.
So, when visiting, there are 27 concrete pillars, each high 8 meters, with two plates on the bottom of each plate with the inscription in German and another language and the column of oak, with the big gate at the front, and on every pillar are 30 articles from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Something you’ll surely like to see.

Nuremberg Fountains

1. Peter-Henlein-Fountain

Nuremberg, Karolinenstr.

The bronze statue above the fountain, unveiled in 1905, is dedicated to the memory of Peter Heinlein (1485-1523).
He is considered to be the inventor of the first pocket watch.
Being the honoured citizen of this town, Max Meißner made a fountain to preserve the memory of one of the more famous citizens of Nuremberg.
He was fist that tried and succeeded to make a smaller watches, that could be carried around until he made the smallest clock that can fit into the small pocket. Later, the thin chain was added, and there was the first male pocket watch.
Truly magnificent work for that age, and a great fountain celebrating the great man.

2. Der Schoene Brunnen

It was built in the late 14th century and represents one of the most beautiful fountains in the whole city.
Having in mind that this town is a real sanctuary for fountains, we are starting from the most complicated one. Built-in tree pieces plus the top, this is such beautiful work of art, and it still defies the time.
Translated it’s called ‘ The Beautiful Fountain ‘.
There is a myth that if you can find a bronze ring on the bottom of the fountain, and you turn it around, you will have a lot of luck, some say it can grant wishes, but all in all a masterpiece of work.
It’s settled at the corner of the main city square, so everyone who comes to this city will see it! The best time to see any of the artworks is best around Christmas time.

3. Tugendbrunnen
Am Karolinenstraße

Council of the City of Nuremberg is the one that commissioned this fountain to be built, and the honour to do it got Benedikt Wurzelbauer (1548 – 1620).
The work lasted from 1584 to 1589, and it’s made in style of late Renaissance. Like many others, it’s made out of bronze and sandstone, and it is worth seeing.
This fountain is widely known as a fountain of virtues. In three layers of finely made sculptures represent the most important virtues that one should obey.
On the ground floor are the first four, where Faith is been represented with the Cross, Love with a love for children, hope with anchor, Generosity with Lion, and in the row above this one are Moderation in a form of Jug, Patience presented with a Lamb, and right there on the top of all of them is Justicia, or Justice, with a blindfold on her eyes, scale in one and a sword in the other hand. Another piece of art you shouldn’t miss if you find yourself in this beautiful city.
There are many other fountains in this town, and every single one of them has its own history, its own story of how it was made, and few of them were rebuild several times.

Nuremberg Streets & Places

1. Hauptmarkt

The Hauptmarkt (main market) Square is the setting for the traditional, world-famous Christkindlesmarkt (Christmas Market) that takes place every year from the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent.
Up until 1349, this was the site of the first, Jewish ghetto in Nuremberg, which was torn down during a pogrom.
It is one of the best-known pedestrian places in town, and during the Christmas holidays, it gathers people from all around the world to see the famous Christmas Angel, which is their version of Santa Claus.
The festivities last for a few weeks, and the main market is filled with all kind of domestic delicates. Here you can find real Christmas ornaments for the tree, made by hand and out of glass, which is pretty rare these days, a place where in the cold everything smells like cookies also made by hand, and cooked vino, to warm all the people which gather here.
There are also several stands from different countries, where people sell their national Christmas ornaments and food.
But, the Chrismas cookies are here so good, that everyone that tried it say that they are filled with nuts, and the real treat when it comes to Christmas food.

2. Palace of Justice
Fürther Str. 110

This complex is built from 1909 to 1916, and at that time it was being used as the appellate court of that time. Having the turbulent past, this is also a place where the infamous Nuremberg Trials were held, from 1945 to 1949 and it is one of the main characteristics of this building.
Nuremberg trials were held on the top floor of this building, and now it is a tourist attraction.
Besides being the appellate court, in the time it was built it served also as a regional court, local court and the public defender’s office.
It was chosen for the trials after WW II because it was one of the rare buildings that weren’t being ruined by bombarding. It was safe for the workers as well as for the defendants because it was easy to guard the prisoners.
The fact is that the courtroom where the trials were held is still being used for the capital punishments.

3. Nürnberger Burg
Auf der Burg 13

Nuremberg Castle is also an ancient building worth seeing, but this Castle anyone can see from very far away. In any corner of this city, if you look a bit better, you can see this beautiful tower. The Tower itself is the beginning and the end of inner city walls, and still, represent one of the largest fortresses from the time when walls of the city needed to be saved.
In the past, that was the most important fortress because it’s on the hill, which is a great spotlight, and of the great importance for the Old Holy Roman Empire.
This Castle, like many other famous buildings in this city, has its own museum. For the ones willing to climb to 385 meters high, will be awarded a view of the whole town, which is amazing. From there everyone can see the happy houses, painted in different colours, and everything that is important in this town was rebuilt after the war, so now anyone can enjoy in one of the most colourful towns in the world.

Nuremberg – Tourist Information

In the building of the Kuenstlerhaus.
Konigsstr. 93 opposite the railway station
Mon. to Sat. 9.a.m. – 7.p.m.
This is an extraordinary building, which was built in 1901., and the name translated means ‘ The House of Artists ‘. From that day forward, this building had a lot of usages, especially during The WW II, but it never went far astray from its original purpose. From 1973 up to 1997 it was one of the biggest cultural centres, and soon became self-governing cultural and communication centre, which soon became famous in Germany, and was one of the first self-governing cultural centres.
Because the beauty belongs to everyone, first they decided to renovate the building and restore all that needed help, and finally, when opened again in 1996., it was decided for this cultural place to be a part of the town, owned by everyone.
Since this kind of fine arts is sometimes being forgotten, in 2008. they decided to merge with other cultural institutions, and became Künstlerhaus in the KunstKulturQuartier.
Since this place is right across the railway station, it was easy to plan all kind of performances. That is the place where always has happenings, every day, no matter which time of year you have chosen, or a specific date, where everyone can find something that is just as it was meant for your pleasure.
It has to be mentioned that it has a part which is Municipal Galery, where you can see the greatest pictures from the 19th century, and some date way back. This institution cannot be really be put to words, but, if you are looking for a sanctuary where cell phones don’t ring, where the pictures and the shows will leave you without breath, if you just want to be left alone and think about beauty, then this is the right place to be.
It seems like every day there is a new happening and there is something for everyone. From movies, modern artworks, exhibitions, workshops for many things for younger and also for older people who like to keep in touch with national arts, concerts for the more or less known artists, festivals are held here, a cultural program for children, as well as dance classes for all ages, so if culture is your thing, look no further, you are in the right place.

2. Viewpoints: Schmausenbuck
Lookout Tower
Opening hours: May – Sept. Sun. from 1 – 5 p.m.
The tower, built in 1888, is 29 m tall and stands on a hill near the zoo. There is a wonderful view over Nuremberg and the surroundings from the viewing platform.
This viewpoint is one of the highest points in this town, standing from the sea 390 meters, and it’s a long walk to get to it, but like all rare and beautiful things, this one too will make you work hard to get there.
In the middle of the wood, where the moss is almost on every stone, pointing north, you’ll want to see in front of you, and that view will be absolutely worth your trip to the observation deck, from where you can almost see the whole world at the palm of your hand.

3. Viewpoints: Sinwelltower
Burg 13
Opening hours: Apr. – Sept. 9 a.m. -12 p.m. & 12.45 – 5 p.m, Oct. – Mar. 9.30 a.m. -12 p.m. & 12.45-4 p.m.
This landmark of the City of Nuremberg, high above the Kaiserburg, provides a lovely view over the old town of Nuremberg and the surroundings. Like the old, wise man, standing tall, keeping the town safe at night.
This Castle is a beautiful example of how you don’t need to run out of town to feel all of its beauty. The Tower is more like a museum than a castle, and everything inside is a big or small work of art that waited for centuries to be seen by as many people as possible could. But that is for another time.
Just to mention, this sightseeing is not for everyone, because, there is just one elevator, and it leads only to the ‘King’s Chambers’, which can also be photographed, and this goes for the whole tower. The only obstacle could be the stairs, which are the only way to get to the top.
But, when you do get to the top, you’ll see that it was worth every single step you made to get to the viewing point.
From there, everything looks small, but on a larger scale, it’s peaceful, and you can see the whole happy town with their colourful houses, every one different from the other in colour, but almost the same in structure. On your way up, you will see wooden roofs of some rooms, and painted rooms in the whole circle, you’ll find old clocks, and many more interesting things.
One thing is for sure, and that is if you like art, you won’t be sorry for getting to the top.

Nuremberg History

1050. First documented mention of Nuremberg

Even though the first Castle on this area was built in 1030., there was no mention nowhere in the books that will definitely say anything about 1030., but at that time, the Castle was built, and the wide network of defence walls, for protection. After the Castle was finished, the first words about were written, because the city of Nuremberg was one of the most elusive targets to possess, and thanks to the ‘ Holy Roman Empire ‘, which wanted this place the most, wrote the first words about the city, the castle, and the stong walls that can defend any city let alone the city the size of Nuremberg ( Nürmberg, which is original name of the town ).
From the 1060., all the way to the middle 15th century, there were Burgraviate of Nuremberg, as a state for the Roman Empire, and it was the whole country packed into one town, surrounded by the Great Tower, and being on the hill, the great position to protect their country within the state.
Somewhere around the late 13th century, the Empire was losing its power over people with different solutions where to create the next country in the arms of the strong city.
By the beginning of the 14th century, Nuremberg was a free city, and people who lived there tried to continue the pretty nice life in such a wealthy city/state.
It is crucial for this period to mention because in 1298., all the Jews in the city were falsely accused of ‘ Host desecration ‘, which is a form of blasphemy, and soon after, there were mass murders of the Jews. Then, in 1349. the Jews of the city lived through pogrom where they were burned alive and tortured in many different ways, in hope to massacre the whole nation and their views on their status, their faith mostly, but mainly because The Holy Empire didn’t want them in such rich surroundings. It passed many years, and the power of the Church subsided, and that opened a new chapter in the history of the ‘ Town Of Thousand Years ‘.

1524 Nuremberg accepts the Reformation

In the Early Middle Ages, not long after the pogrom, Jews, or what little there were left in the town were all transferred across the river Pegnitz, to the common flooding places. Soon after there was a Black Plague that devastated almost the whole of Europe and nearby countries, and if there is one place to be safe in was this town, with its rich citizens was the White Tower, with its walls, so no one could enter the town without everyone seeing it. It was estimated that from the Black Plague died from 50 to 200 from Euroasia to Europe. The Plague was back in the town several times losing a lot of people from this disease.
Finally, things were looking a bit brighter with the coming of the Reformation of the Church, and there were few things that predicate upon some changes that change not only Germany but the whole world.
In the first place, the invention of a Printing Press was one of the best ways to educate people about the new Protestant Church, which was willing to change in order for them not to lose too much audience. By that time, in larger cities, almost all the people were literate, so that was the easiest way to get to the peoples home, right from the printing presses. Nuremberg was one of those kinds of towns, where people were well read and at that time that was the only thing to do in their free time. As the presses printed the Martin Luter’s Reformation with the ‘ Ninety-five Theses ‘, Protestant Church was competing with the Ottoman Empire and the Catholic Church. When things subsided, the presses printed more material, and it was translated in a few different languages, because there was the open market for the better religion, looking like media impact that was explaining the changes in the Protestantism.
Like many other, Martin Luther was the teacher of theology, artist, composer, monk, but in the end was excommunicated from Church, because he didn’t want to recant his statement that he did not agree with Churches statements saying: ”Unless I am convinced by scripture and plain reason, I do not accept the authority of Popes and Councils, for they have contradicted themselves.”. As a reminder, he made the biggest contribution to the Reformation of the Protestant Church, but after some time, he got excommunicated for having a different opinion.
Anyway, he was the first that made the Protestant Church much more popular, that was until his Theses.
When the changes were made final in 1524. the Reformation was introduced widely, and the first town was the Nuremberg city, because of many noblemen in town who could promote further the stands of the Church, and give generously to the new Protestant religion.

1649 Nuremberg Peace Banquet seals the end of the Thirty Years War.

There was one thing that preceded The Nuremberg Peace Banquet, and that was on October 24, 1648., a few months before the Treaty of Münster and Osnabrück, when the Thirty Year War ended. That was the Treaty between the German Empire, France and Sweeden.
Because it was the least damaged town in Europe, and the leadership of its town elder, famous, and rich people had the skill set for completing the Treaty and make it a “Nuremberg Peace Banquet”, which was held in the ‘Greater City Hall’ and it lasted from May 1649. to July 1650. It was one of the most important pieces for the European peace congress because it ended the 30 years of blood and suffering of the people across the continent, therefore it’s named the “Nuremberg Peace Banquet”.
After the Banquet, the Treaty was needed to be implemented into all parts that were under the war, and they called it “Nuremberg Implementation Congress”, divided into two Provisions, that said basically that ‘The General Peace Treaty’ was supposed to be lead by the guidelines of the Holy Empire and the first guideline and a legal norm which will be upheld constantly and irrevocably.’

1835 The first railway runs between Nuremberg and Fuerth

In August of 1834. Bavarian parliament passed the law about the construction of Ludwig South-North Railway, which was starting at Nuremberg, going through the Fürth, Erlangen and finishing at the Forchheim, which would be the most important railway in Bavaria in German large transport routes.
The work on the railroad started just a year after the bill was passed, and the railroad was already finished just one year later, in 1835.
From that time forward, railway trough the whole country was always renovated, almost every year there were changes to make better the railroad and now it is one of the best known, and the safest railroad in Europe.
The last changes were made in a way that all of the track is electric, and the best feature about this railroad is that it has the magnet-operated system that keeps the train on the track on the places where it has the possibility to slide or turn over the tracks called tilting technology. So if looking for safe, and the cheapest way to get around Germany is their railroad, for sure.

1945-49 “Nuremberg Trials” of representatives of the Nazi regime.

For the longest time, Nuremberg with its citizens tried to change the fact that ” Nuremberg Trials ” were one of the main things this town was familiar for. They succeeded at that by building town almost from the ground up, because it was devastated in the war, creating one of the most beautiful towns in Europe, where all the tourists from around the globe can get here and admire of what had become from ruined town.
The trials were held in one of the remaining structures in the town that didn’t suffer the tragic fatality of most of the other important buildings in town.
Palace of Justice was not only served for trials but for holding the accused because this building was slightly damaged but the part where the trials and the prisoners were held was in great shape.
The Nuremberg trials were the whole series of trials by military laws, held by Allied Forces, then called The United Nations, following the letter of the law of the International Law, and The laws of war, created to punish the most gruesome war crimes committed in World War II.
The law was created for the prosecution of the most important people of Nazi Germany, who planned and executed the Holocaust and other war crimes committed during the time from 1939. up to 1945.
The most known and the most mentioned in the ‘International Military Tribunal’ was one of the British judges Sir William Norman Birkett. The trials were held from November the 20th, 1945. to October the first 1946., in which time there were 24 of the top ranking Nazi officers, and others from the Nazi regime.
While the most important people like Adolf Hitler, Hans Krebs, Wilhelm Emanuel Burgdorf and Paul Joseph Goebbels escaped their punishment by committing the suicide, just to avoid the trials, the rest of leading elite stood trial. Heinrich Luitpold Himmler tried to co take the cyanide, but he was captured to stand the trial. He committed suicide the next day.
The only one who shared his destiny was Hermann Wilhelm Göring, who stood the trials and took cyanide the same morning he was about to be hanged.
From 24 people who stand trials, 12 of them were sentenced to be hung until death, and 10 of the received the sentence of life in prison, while 2 of them, earlier mentioned, committed suicide.
The Palace of Justice is still in its place, still serves as a court, and the trial room number 600, where the trials were held is still being used as a courtroom for the most serious crimes.
During the weekend’s courtroom, No.600 is opened for tourists to visit this place, but The Nuremberg Trials Memorial is hosted by Nuremberg Musem, where you can see transcripts and some of the personal belongings there.

2001 Opening of the Documentation Centre on the Nazi Party Rally Grounds.

The Documentation Center Nazi Party Rallying Grounds is a museum in Nuremberg where it’s held the permanent exhibition with the name “Fascination and Terror”, which is connected with all the things that were written and pictured during the Second World War. The relics held there are mostly about causes and consequences and the infamous connections of the ‘ Nazi Germany ‘.
In the extension of the museum is the education centre, which solely function is to educate people about the horrors of the war, and how to preserve the world of the same thing happening again.
In 2001. the town of Nuremberg received the prize called ‘Innovation-prize of the Nuremberg region’ for their opening from Documentation Centre.
In 2002., the museum received another award from the British Guild of Travel Writers Limited for ‘ The Best New Overseas Tourism Project’.
The permanent exhibition called the “Fascination and Terror” ( or ‘Faszination und Gewalt‘ ) describes Nazi Partie Rallies, which instigator was Julius Streicher, who was one of the more important people for propaganda as a member of Nazi Party, and the author of the anti-Semitic newspaper called ‘ Der Stürmer ‘ ( The Storm Trooper ) ,which was published once a week, and it had tabloid character as one of the strongest ways to influence people, from 1923. until 1945.with some interruptions with the concern with the law.
The main thing about the Opening of Documentation Centre was to further educate, by opening the files what predicted the war, and the ways of stopping from happening again. That not only served the people of Germany who also lost many people in that war but for the rest of the world to know their history because it is the only way of predicting the future similar situations that could lead to almost equal consequences.

Städtische Bühnen Nürnberg Opera House

The opera house was built between 1901 and 1905, redesigned by the Nazis, and was fortunately only slightly damaged in 1945. The building contains the main theatre, the studio theatre and the opera house.
So many artists performed here, that it can not be mentioned in one set, but here, for the lovers of any cultural happenings in town, is a real treat.
This is one of Bavarian largest place for the finest arts, in the country where classical music is still appreciated.
This place has a permanent staff of 550 people. Most of them are Opera singers and settings workers, but among them, there are drama players, and of course, the ballet dancers. All of them are being led by Jens-Daniel Herzog, and they are divided into about 650 up to 700 performances.
More than one of them are being performed for the season, some even for a whole year. And every year, trough this Opera House goes about 300.000 people, and that number keeps rising.
The Opera House is made out of venues where ‘ The Opera House’ is the most beautiful, then there is the ‘Play House’ which includes smaller stages, for the smaller groups of people on the stage, but all of them are being regularly used during any season of the year.
needles to say, that the most beautiful if the Opera House, and even you are not the fan of the opera, you will surely enjoy the whole performance that goes within a place like this one.

Meister-singerhalle

Münchner Str. 21
Consists of a large and a small hall, for all different kinds of concerts. Among others, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra performs its concerts in the large hall. Meistersingerhalle is a municipal Center of Town of Nuremberg and with it’s cultural and conges obligations.
All that, and many more, you can see here, just be informed about what new is there, and does it fit your taste. Build in 1963. it became so popular, that in 2007. it received listing as a ‘Monuments of the Town’.
The name of the Meistersinger which was literally ‘ the Mastersingers’ became a prefix for the name of this venue, and even Wagner wrote an opera, in which he refers to this great place.
With the numbers of more than 800 performances per year and over 350.000 visitors in the same time-frame is a stunning number, and among 800 performances everyone in the world can find something to look forward to.

Altstadthof Bühne

Bergstr. 19
Small, intimate theatre in the heart of the old town.
This was, at first, a private little theatre, where the more common people used to come here, for a good atmosphere, great food, and lot of smiley faces to welcome you every time.
After some time, this place becomes famous and now it is a municipal stage, for all kind of performances.
A while ago, this place had its venue at Lessing Hall, before it got its permanent place. That was also a task for someone, and that someone was Karl Pschigode who was at the time an actor and after that, he became a theatre director. For choosing the name he was also the first in the row, but, as the fortune will be cruel, and instead of “Intimate Theater” the place got the name that it has today.

A cinema in the CineCitta “cinema city” that shows films in 3D.
This is one of the largest cinemas in the whole of Europe, certainly the biggest in Germany. With almost 5.000 seating places and 22 separated cinemas, this will be the experience of a lifetime for those who love cinema as the seventh art.
For those who rather say: ‘I’ll wait for the movie’ this is the right place to see and feel the cinema art without reading any books, you can feel the comfort, and in new technology that is being used here, you will fill as a part of the movie that you are watching.
Except for the movies for all ages, you will find also children’s movies and plays, you can find 4 restaurants here with almost everything you can possibly desire. From popcorn and soda drink which are pretty common, you can not find other stuff like tapas menu, American dinner, cinema breakfast, fine Asian cuisine, Lounge bar, Trattoria with its Italian delicatessens, and many other tasty things you wouldn’t expect to see in the cinema.
The complex is on the river Pegnitz, so even walk to get to the cinema will be interesting enough. Until this day, the cinema already had its 2.5 million visitors, and the number is rising by the day. No matter which movie you are willing to see and feel the experience, you won’t regret it.

Gostner Hoftheatre

Austr. 70
The most prominent small theatre in Nuremberg has its own ensemble. Guest theatre groups also perform here. This is one of the private theatres, where you can enjoy in smaller group of people, not worrying about the loud noises from the rows below you, just relax and see for yourself how those who are not yet professionals, can make you love the theatre even more, if you loved them before, and at least feel like not waisting several hours on the art that will at least occupy your attention for the time spent there.
The Gostner Hoftheater is a private theatre founded in 1979 and operated by the association Gostner Hoftheater. It mainly shows pieces by young, and new authors, but also modern arrangements of classics and other theatre groups that show independent scene in Nuremberg. The Gostner was remade from the toy factory into a “theatre around the corner”. Only a decade later, the stage, originally conceived as a workshop theatre, was able to present its own productions with professional actors and directors. In the meantime, it has become established as the second important theatre in Nuremberg’s culture alongside the Staatstheater Nürnberg.
The theatre is located on the Gostenhof, near to the cafe bar ‘Loft’ with small green outside scene for performing.
There is also a theatre for the children, so you can relax with the whole family, educating your kids that the theatre is one of the most important arts, which slowly dies, with TV exposure, so that is also a reason to see one of the many shows that are being presented in this small but influential places.

Tassilo-Theatre

Sielstr. 5
A variety of theatre, where both cabaret and comedies in the Franconian dialect are performed. In the form of Cabaret, it was popular from 1982 to 2013, and it was a private Cabaret owned by Gerd Fischer.
The place could seat approximately about 250 guests.
Since they didn’t get the permission to make it on the courtyard, they made a basement that was fit for a place like this.
Because of the form of Cabaret, it was not that popular, among all the townspeople, but some things are facts, like that one of the most famous plays that Fisher wrote himself, and named it “Operetta sich Kann Kann” was performed 1.500 times, and it was always filled with people.
Even though some people don’t like this kind of theatre, with its vulgar language and scenes that are not for everyone’s eyes, bit by bit it lost most of its audience.
The critics from the evening newspapers almost ruined the reputation of this place, and even if it was full for 2 decades, in the ’80 and ’90., time passed by, and the theatre was closed in 2013.
These days, you can rent the place in front of the theatre, which can accommodate about 50-60 people, for not that big cost, and the stage which can seat up to 90 people safely.

Franken-stadium

Messezentmm
The Franken Stadium is the home ground of the 1st FC Nuremberg football club and is considered to be one of the most attractive football stadiums in Germany. It was opened in 1928 and since then it changed its name several times. Since 1966 this is the official stadium for Bundesliga and in 1974 this stadium was used in the Olympic Games 6 times for the matches.
Its first name was Städtisches Stadion or the Municipal stadium after war everything was victorious, and the name for the stadium in 1945 was changed into Victory Stadium. After that, in 1961 it was called by its first name or the Municipal Stadium, and in 1991 it got the name Frankenstadion Stadium.
March of 2006 brought the new name, and it was called easyCredit-Stadion, and the name stayed for a full of 5 years. The demonstration for the renaming of the stadium was held, and many wanted for the stadium to have a name of one of it’s most famous players Max Morlock.
After a big sponsorship, the station gets its new name again, this time, calling it by its sponsors, Grundig Stadion.
After that, there were only two changes left, in 2016 it was back to Stadion Nürnberg, and in 2017 it finally got its name, which stands even today, and its called Max-Morlock-Stadion.
So, if planning to see the football game, don’t worry much about the name of the stadium, just join the group, and enjoy the game. Facts about its name are less important.

Tafelhatle

Äußere Sulzbacher Str. 60
This theatre hosts guest performances and shows by small theatre groups.
Built originally in 1909, it was then a factory for producing the screws. In 1987 building was reconstructed, and now it is the place for the young artist, that are still trying to climb their way to glory, a place where people gather and collect ideas for new plays and new forms of art, there is also an auditorium where they can rehearse and be guided by the better-known artists.
There is also a theatre café, and a rehearsal stage, which creates new hope for new performers.
Also, as part of the building is the ‘Industrial Museum’, where you can relax, and think through everything that young people tried on stage.
Today, the venue of this place is the dance room, with wooden floors, theatre room for the newcomers, and all that in the safety of their cultural centre, where everyone is welcome.

Burgtheater

Füll 13
The Burg Theatre is a variety theatre. It hosts the famous cabaret festival in autumn. Besides, it has old forms of art besides cabaret, and there are comics, with their performances, and minor arts, but still not forgotten, like making jewellery, blowing glass and making small figurines, miniature sculptures, and coins from the old days…all of that relived in the hands of people who did it a lot of time, and in this place, people can learn how to make them, or sometimes repair some of the old pieces.
What is being done here didn’t pass without notice, that is why in 1987 they got the scholarship, and in 2009. they received the ‘Nuremberg City Prize’.
The theatre changed the place once before, but now it’s settled in Füll No.13., since May of 1984.
A place to see the young people in action, performing and bettering themselves each day, so that one day, they can have their parts in Shakespeare on a bigger scene.

Nuremberg City Tour part I

Nuremberg city tour part II

Following the almost total destruction of historic Nuremberg during the Second World War, the City council wisely rejected all suggestions to preserve a “tabula rasa” or, as happened in many other places, to erect a purely modern city on the ruins. It decided instead to proceed cautiously with the re-building of the old city, and it did so exceedingly well, as anyone who visits Nuremberg in “Meyer’s Universum” in 1837 sounds equally applicable today:

Modern travellers encounter on all sides evidence of Nuremberg’s 900 years of history, reflecting epochs of proud dignity as well as periods of decline and denigration and combining intellectual clarity with romantic whimsy. Here they find a city illustrative of Germany’s past and present, where the impressive monuments of many centuries of prodigious inventiveness and cultural self-confidence survive amidst the hurly-burly of a modern, dynamic metropolis.

“Such diversity protects the traveller from boredom which so often afflicts him when he goes to visit the stereotyped cities of our modern age, where every house and every square resemble each other, just like soldiers’ uniforms”. It is open to speculation why, in the words of E.T.A. Hoffmann, Nuremberg was, for princes and sovereigns, “the apple of their eye”. Be that as it may, the emperor Friedrich II decreed in his Great Charter of 1219″ … irrevocably and for all time that no citizen of this place shall have any protector other than Ourselves and Our successors, the Roman kings and emperors”. And Karl IV laid down that every future emperor had to hold his first Imperial Diet in Nuremberg.

Nuremberg Germany – Panorama

Thus the Imperial castle is, for the inhabitants of Nuremberg too, the “apple of their eye”, and they like to refer to the fortress, which took centuries to build, as the city’s “crowning glory”. This is where the emperors resided, and it is from here that housetops with their pointed gables and the tall church spires to the skyline of the satellite towns and the dark green expanse of the vast pine forests named after the two main churches, St. Lawrence and St. Sebaldus.

These churches, testimonials in soaring Gothic to the piety and public spirit of bygone ages, may seem to the uninitiated, at first sight, to be outwardly almost identical; but their interiors are unique “celestial halls”, adorned with magnificent works of arts, of which only the most important can be listed here the “Annunciation” by Veit Stoss, the tabernacle by Adam Kraft and the tomb of St. Sebaldus by Peter Vischer.

Pegnitz river

On the banks of the Pegnitz, between these two great ecclesiastical edifices, stands the Church of Our Lady, on the western facade of which the citizens of Nuremberg placed a delightful memorial to the Emperor Karl IV – the “Männleinlaufen”, an ornamental clock with an ingenious mechanism whereby daily, at noon, the figures of the seven Prince Electors rotate around the Emperor, watched and admired by hundreds of tourists gathered in the square below the “Hauptmarkt” or Main Market. Here, too, is the “Schöner Brunnen” Fountain, celebrated in song and story, with its “lucky ring” artistically welded to the lattice-work. Loving couples delight in turning this ring, for it is reputed to bring good luck and happiness in young, or even more mature love. Each year, in this selfsame square at Christmas, a fairytale come true – the world-famous “Christkindlesmarkt“, or Christmas Fair, when this enchanting “township of boots and stalls made of wood and cloth” delights the children and transports their elders back to what were perhaps happier times.

Nuremberg Main Market “Hauptmarkt”

This is the most famous place in town because it’s busy in the middle of the summer, or in the middle of the winter. Many people bring domestic, organic food, that’s being raised in the vicinity of the town, but surely somewhere near, so all year round, you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, along with many other things this Main Market has to offer.
But, there is a little magic about this place…during the winter, it becomes the home of the Christmas Angel. She is being chosen every three years and represents Santa Claus in this town. It is so festive and everyone is so polite and familiar, that you wish you have chosen this destination for vacation much earlier. But, nothing is too late. All year round, this place has so much to offer. It is a town full of life and colours, little art-work shops, where the recipes for their finest products dates long, some of them almost as long as the town exists.

Toy Museum in Nuremberg

The same thing happens a little further on – in the Toy Museum, the very heart of this “metropolis of toys”, while the Germanic National Museum on the Kornmarkt, originally a Carthusian monastery, offers one of the finest and most important presentations of German art and culture.
Beneath the castle is the house where Albrecht Dürer lived, and here, at the Tiergärtner Gate, is the finest square in Nuremberg – rendezvous, particularly on mild summer evenings, for enthusiastic visitors from all over the world. And having mentioned Dürer, we must also quote some other names famous in the city’s great cultural history – the humanist Willibald Pirckheimer for example, Martin Behaim, Peter Henlein, Hans Sachs, Regiomontan, Anselm and Ludwig Feuerbach, together with Adam Kraft, Veit Stoss and Peter Vischer whom we have already referred to.

Albrecht Durer house

This list is far from exhaustive and the names do not come solely from the period when Nuremberg was called the “centre of Germany and all Europe” and the ” fatherland of wisdom and the dwellinghouse of genius“.

Even nowadays, Nuremberg retains its position as a centre as far as communications are concerned. It is surrounded by a network of motorways; its harbour on the Main-Danube Canal is the focal point on this waterway linking the North Sea and the Black Sea, soon – in a few year’s time – to be opened throughout its entire length; and its airport ranks high among passengers and pilots alike as far as popularity and safety are concerned.

Nuremberg has continued its great tradition in the field of trade and commerce. Companies of international repute have successfully perpetuated the proverbial inventiveness and business acumen of the city’s old inhabitants and have carried the products and the name of Nuremberg to the four corners of the world.
Nuremberg is a good place to live in. It has one of Europe’s finest zoos, its citizens make the most of their various festivities, the local Franconian cuisine is dainty and appetizing, the beer can stand comparison with any produced in Bavaria and the city’s best-known specialities are fried sausages and gingerbread. The surrounding area has many delights to offer, both scenic and cultural, and anyone who takes time to explore it after having exhausted the manifold attractions of the city will be richly rewarded.
Although Martin Luther was writing in another context, we may aptly quote his words of praise here:

“Nuremberg shines forth throughout Germany like a sun among the moon and stars”

Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg

The Germanisches Nationalmuseum in town is proud to be the largest museum of history and culture in the whole country. It has over 1 million objects of art, and 250 thousand of them are on permanent display. The museum is old and it stands from 1852. and since then it holds the most valuable treasures from all over the country. In 1981., there was a town’s offer to make a model of new art, that will be displayed permanently in front of the museum. Israeli sculptor Daniel “Dani” Karavan made an offer that the town couldn’t refuse, and now in front of the museum is a gate with 27 columns up in the air, two of the round plates, which represent columns that are underground, and the round oak, as the 30th column.
On each and everyone it one of the articles written in ‘The Universal Declaration of Human Rights’, on two plates, one in German, and the other 30 are written in 30 different languages spoken around the world.

Hospital of the Holy Spirit “Heilig Geist Spital”

The Hospital of the Holy Spirit is erected in 1339. and opened by Konrad Gross, who gave most of his money to build it, to feed and clothe all the people who were sick, homeless, who didn’t have food etc. For treatment in the hospital, everyone that was staying there was being used to pray for the Konrad Gross, for his peace in the afterworld, and surely for even going into heaven. He was a rich merchant, and since no one knows what he did that needed so much prayer, but one thing is sure, if you were there at the time, that meant that you must pray for him as long as you stay there.
This, like many other buildings, had a crash during the Second World War, but it wasn’t that horrible since they successfully restored it after the war.
These days, this is a place where young people can join together, exchange opinions, there is a pedestrian part, and a little coffee shop, where you can rest, or have a conversation, or just enjoy the view.
The second interesting thing about this place is that underground is a series of tunnels, of which some are filled with beer that’s there for the aging, and also, there is a place for the parties, so at night, everything here turns into a place for all the young people that live or just visiting.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-2108" src="https://www.inuremberg.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/wishring-1024x578.jpg" alt="Wishring - The history of the “Wishring” dates back to a love story from the Middle Ages.
Schöner Brunnen or the literal translation ‘The Beautiful Fountain’ was made in the 14th century by the Heinrich Beheim, and it is right next to the Town Hall, and on the Main Marketplace, and it made out of several layers, out of which every single one of them tells a story, and the hight in full is 19 meters, which is pretty high for a fountain.
On this one fountain, that’s not a typical ‘make a wish’ fountain, they made Mozes with all seven prophets, The Nine Worthies, seven of the Prince-electors, Four of the Churches Fathers, Four Evangelists, and all of the seven arts in the Holy Roman Empire, and in summary, this fountain represents their beliefs and their philosophy.
Unlike throwing the money in the water in the fountain, this one is a bit different, and here is why. On the fence of the fountain are golden ( today brass ) ring. if you manage to find it and turn it around, good luck will follow you, and the others are saying the same thing, only that the fountain grants you a one wish, but even then remember, sometimes, wishes come true.
