What is the perfect Christmas holiday? To enjoy the moment in #Nuremberg and forget about your worries for a while. Whether strolling through the Christmas Market, enjoying medieval atmosphere in the Old Town or shopping individual gifts for your friends and family. If you are interested in culture, a visit to one of the many museums in town is a must. These are memories that will last a lifetime! [more…] Nuremberg Christmas Market – christkindlesmarkt.de

From a window of the Church of Our Lady ( Frauenkirche ) , an angel with flowing blond curls, a crown, and golden wings, appears above the Nuremberg market and proclaims: “the Christkind invites you to her market, and whoever comes is welcome!”

Tradition as old as 400 years, gets together over 2.000.000 people every single year around the Christmas. Instead of Santa Claus, there is a Christmas angel, and by their tradition, she is the one that opens and welcomes all the guests, but not only that, she has so much to do around these days. But first, a bit of history.

Nuremberg Christmas market : Nürnberg

The Nuremberg Christmas market – one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany.

Tradition says that a new Angel is chosen every 2 years. It’s always a young pretty lady, with a smile on her face, always ready to be with children and to try to listen to them all. She wears the same traditional gown, but, because the costume is made out of real gold, the stars on the gown are changed every 2 years.

When she opens the Nuremberg Christmas market, then she reads to the children and talks to them almost the whole day, gathering their Christmas wishlists, trying to promise them all to get what they want. She has her own charette with horses so that everyone can see her, no matter how long you stay, if you came here for Christmas activities, you’ll see her for sure.

Looking from above, from The Church of Our Lady, where the angels welcome you, the view is something else. Except for a lot of people down below the terrace, you can see red and white stripes which are covering the whole square, and streets around it.

Having in mind that so many people are coming, it’s not too much when you hear that there is about 180 stand that sells everything that is connected to the Christmas and this great town! Except that, there are international stands from Poland, China, Scandinavian countries, and also from other parts of the country.

Christkindlesmarkt is a Nuremberg Christmas market that is held annually in Nuremberg. It takes place during Advent in the Hauptmarkt, the central square in Nuremberg’s old town, and in adjoining squares and streets.

If by now you are not convinced, remember that this is the place to be for Christmas, and there are more than one reason why should you?

First, the smells, where everything smells like roasting almonds, gingerbread cookies in all shapes and sizes, bratwurst ( the Geman sausage ), and the traditionally prepared mulled wine, with its seasonings, ads a funny note to the whole story. The wine is cooked with cider, honey, cinnamon, star anise, and orange peel…and all that in one place, and in one hot mug.

Their gingerbread cookies are famous by having a lot of nuts in them, and that separates those cookies, from the other in different parts of the country.

The first one of the Christmas market was held about year 1628., from which there is a Christmas box in the National Museum of Nuremberg, and in it is still 12 silk skeins ( a length of thread, yarn or silk in this case, loosely coiled and knotted ), so at that time, it was celebrated.

Besides the decorations for the Christmas tree, there are so many things to find here, on the marketplace, and stuff to do that you have to go and see for yourself. For example, there are whole day children care, where kids can do all kind of stuff, from making things out of the glass to making cookies with elders to dipping candles into the barrels with colour, thus painting the candles themselves.

Beside those children, who got more time, can stay and make small houses, and decorating them, in Christmas children bakery, there is also the children post office, and a puppet theatre. Everything a child may need in this jungle of glitter.

The things that must be mentioned about this great gathering of people is that the Nuremberg’s Chrismas Market was moved around several times, from the Insel Schütt which is a small island on the river Pegnitz, to the Plato of the Museum of Applied Arts, then there was a movement to the Transport Museum, which had enough space in those days to get all people around.

There is a sentence from St. Sebald Church which says that Christmas sermon was cancelled in 1616. because everyone was on the Christmas Marketplace, so they had to change the date of the beginning of the Christmas Market. Today, the whole thing starts on the 4.th of December, so everyone can enjoy both Christmas Market and Church Sermon for the Christmas Eve.

From 1545. they got after the reformation of the Church, for the children of Nuremberg are having their presents from “Holy Christkind”.
In 1933. The Nuremberg Christmas Market was back on the main square, in front of the Church Of Our Lady, and since then its still at the same place.

Everything from ornaments, for the tree, to the Christmas Angel made by hand in gold leaves, can make a great present for you or for someone who you love, you’ll find just about everything here for your comfy stay there until you get back, you’ll feel like living in a fairytale.

If you like Christmas and enjoy festivities that are great, marry, shiny and traditional, you won’t regret deciding the City of Nuremberg for the Christmas holiday!

the night before Christmas, is a magical time across the world, filled with traditions and festivities that vary from place to place. In the heart of Germany, one city stands out for its enchanting and centuries-old Christmas Eve celebration—Nuremberg. Nuremberg Christmas Eve on “Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt” as it is known in German, is a holiday experience like no other. Let’s delve into the history, charm, and traditions of this iconic Christmas market.

A Rich History:

The roots of the Nuremberg Christmas market can be traced back to the early 17th century. In 1628, it was officially mentioned as a “Kindles-Marck” (a market for children) and has been a cherished tradition ever since. The market, however, has evolved significantly while preserving its historic character.

Setting the Stage:

The Nuremberg Christmas Eve market typically opens in late November and lasts until December 24, offering visitors an entire month to bask in its charm. The venue for this yuletide spectacle is the Hauptmarkt, the central square in the city. Framed by the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) and the iconic Schoener Brunnen fountain, it’s a picture-perfect setting.

The Christkind:

At the heart of the Nuremberg Christmas Eve market is the Christkind, the Christ Child. This angelic figure, usually portrayed by a local young woman, officially opens the market with a prologue in the early evening hours of the market’s first day. Dressed in an ethereal white and gold robe with a crown of candles, the Christkind exudes a magical presence. She delivers a heartwarming speech, capturing the spirit of Christmas.

The Treasures of the Market:

Visitors are treated to a cornucopia of Christmas delights at the market. Stroll through rows of beautifully decorated stalls, showcasing handcrafted wooden ornaments, exquisite gingerbread cookies, and delightful Christmas decorations. The Nuremberg Zwetschgenmännle, or prune people, are unique, handcrafted figures made from prunes and walnuts.

Gastronomic Delights:

Nuremberg is famous for its culinary offerings, and the Christmas market is no exception. Sample the city’s renowned Nuremberg sausages, traditionally served three-in-a-bun with sauerkraut and a dollop of mustard. Roasted almonds, mulled wine, and Lebkuchen, a type of gingerbread, are also must-try treats.

The Glow of Candlelight:

As night falls, the market comes alive with the warm, inviting glow of candles and twinkling lights. Stroll through the stalls, savoring the aroma of roasted chestnuts, and listen to Christmas carols performed by local choirs. The market’s atmosphere is pure enchantment.

Nuremberg Christmas Eve is a sensory feast, immersing visitors in the spirit of the season. The city’s commitment to preserving its traditions while offering something new every year makes it a unique and magical destination for anyone seeking the true essence of Christmas. With its historical significance, vibrant market, and welcoming atmosphere, Nuremberg offers a Christmas experience that’s hard to rival.

Nuremberg Old Town Festival, like in many other countries, Germany also has the tradition of celebrating their people, their natural products, and their country. A bit different from the October Fest, here you can see and enjoy much more than just a beer and bratwurst. This is one more thing to celebrate, besides The Christmas Market in this town. If you don’t mind windy autumn, and you have plans to go somewhere where you’d be respected as most visitors do, this is a place where you can spend the whole holiday, and bring home great memories.

Amongst other nice things, you’ll see here, keep in mind that this Festival is announced the safest and the cleanest, so you can enjoy yourself here for about two weeks because this is how long this festival lasts.

From the beginning, there is a parade, where people across the country bring all their best and selling their craftsman in the Festival. In the beginning, the wagon filled with people, which are pulled by horses, goes first, and the people in them throw candy ( bonbons, chocolates, and other sweets ) into the crowd that’s looking at the festivities.

If you come to see the beginning of the festival, you’ll see the best that this town and some towns that near have to offer.

The best horses, with their braided encolure, nicely looking are the first in the long line of people. After you’ll see ponies or the little hoses for children, the best bull and the cow, pulling the barrel of newly-pressed wine, some of which aren’t wine just yet, but there is wine from last year to fill the flavour of real wine. Let’s not forget about sausages that are made there on the spot, and as a part of their national cuisine, delicates of its kind. You’ll have to try it to enjoy it, made out of meat, without any additives.

Altastadtfest nuremberg germany Old town festival

Besides, keep in mind that this is the country of beer, and here you can enjoy it on every street and on every corner. Along with their homemade sausages will fill your appetite for as long as you need. Nuremberg opens its doors for every nationality there is, so during the festival, you can also see how for example, the Chinese, or Italians celebrate. This town made possible for all of the people whose roots aren’t German, to celebrate in their own way and express themselves not forgetting where did they come from, so they have their stands and their own delicates, showing the world that everybody is more than welcome here.

You’ll see flag-throwers, and whip-crackers, as their old tradition, which were kept to these days.
Among the other things, they clothe themselves in their old clothes, from which some dates all the way to the middle ages. So, you will see most warned clothing from this area from centuries ago, along with young nowadays Scouts, with their full equipment.

With all of that, whole the way through will follow the national music, played by the younger team of school going children, making this event so special, that the words can not explain them, you can only be there to live it with them!

Not to forget younger children, straight from kindergarten along with their teachers, strolling around the city. Unlike the usual festivals, here you can stay and watch, but most people, being either domestic or foreign after the main parade is gone, the rest of the people comes along with the crowd, ending the tour on the Marketplace, where somehow, everyone already had their stand prepared for the guests.

But, maybe the most important event during those days must be Jousting fishermen in their small boats, trying to stay afloat, and not be turned over by the rivalling team.

One of the lesser known, practices, but alive still. It may look funny, and foolish a bit, but it is part of their history, and all of them are more than serious when it comes to jousting on the River Pegnitz.

The whole festival usually starts at the end of August, and the beginning of September, but sometimes it’s being moved to the middle of September. In any case, it’s always funny, a lot of smiling people who welcomes you to their celebration.

If you decide to stay to the end of the celebration, you’ll have the honour to watch the big firework that lits up the whole southern part of the town, and if you are on the higher ground, no matter where you are, you will be able to see it.

If jousting on the river is not your kind of fun, you will find quite a lot to do during these days, and when you get back home, you will realize that you don’t necessarily need the sea for your holiday to be exceptional, come to Nuremberg to feed your eyes, your soul, your adventurous spirit, and of course, your stomach.

4. Delphi ( greek restaurant )

Every little bread is made on the spot, and you can get everything in it. From just tomatoes and garlic sauce to ham, to eggs, mushrooms, and a variety of spices that go in those sandwiches.

Of course, the best that they have to offer are all kind of pasta you can think of. First on their menu is Tagliatelle al Salmone but besides that, they have the pasta for every taste. Hot or cold, with or without sauce, meat or vegetarian, everything you can think of, you can get here in pasta.
Fish dishes are next on the menu, and they also have a long history of the greatest dishes made of seafood.

After the sea bass, shrimps, and grilled fish with warm potato in a sauce made for it, you can not make the best choice for a while. The only thing that was maybe considered as the bad thing is that portions are too big for one man.

Then you would be on the real puzzle because after that there is a meat menu, also made from local fresh meat. Then, there is the hardest choice of dishes, because the pizza was invented in Italy, and the best along with the rare ones are on this menu, and you wouldn’t have to wait for too long to get it. That may be the reason why you should choose pizza, but in the case when you are very hungry. Still, keep in mind that portions are very big for one person.

On their official menu there is not a single dessert, but knowing their culinary skills, you can wish for one, and they will do their best to make you satisfied. This is one of the most visited Italian restaurants in the whole country, so keep that in mind given that restaurant is in the center of the town, and it offers more than you can eat.

Location: Theatergasse 17, 90402 Nürnberg, Germany
Phone: +49 911 2742130
Open hours: 11:30 A.M to 11:30 P.M.

The Nuremberg Gingerbread Cookie ( die Nürnberger Lebkuchen ) was first made in the city of Nuremberg, Germany during the 14th century. The original recipe called for ground almonds, raisins, candied orange peel, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, and lemon zest. They are world famous and for most people inextricably linked to Christmas – the Nuremberg gingerbread.

The word itself comes from two or even three words put together. First comes from the Latin “libum” which was flat bread, another is from the German word Laib meaning loaf, and another Greman word “lebbe” which is used to describe something very sweet.

Another possibility is that it comes from Leb-Honig which is an old term for crystallized honey taken directly from the bee hive and it can not be used for eating, but rather just for cooking and baking. And Kuchen is a name for cake, so it seems like all of them are true, at least for this sweet from Nuremberg.

From the original way this sweet cookie is made, there is now a variety of them. They come as low-fat, in other recipes, there are gluten-free ones, covered with chocolate, etc…

However, the Nuremberg Gingerbread Cookies are most common around Christmas time, and it’s the most popular Nuremberg Christmas Market, where everyone has their own variation on how to make it best, to how to decorate them in the traditional, or more in the way that today’s buyer wants them to look and taste like.

The most common ones have the Oblaten or the thin wafers on the bottom, but if you want them to be gluten-free, the main recipe doesn’t have a wafer at the bottom.

Lebkuchen – Nuremberg Gingerbread

They are made out of beaten eggs, sugar, and vanilla. Add the nuts, lemon juice and the rest of the spices are anything you would like in a Lebkuchen, leave it in the fridge for 24 hours and place it on a tray with a little spoon and you have made the cookies. It may be with a wafer on the bottom or without, it is there for cookies to be caught or packed easier, and it is eatable.

Decoration of a Nuremberg Gingerbread cookies

You can decorate these cookies with sprinkles, colored sugar, or even edible glitter! If you want to make them extra special, try adding some dried fruit, nuts, or chocolate chips.

Those cookies are also called Nuremberg gingerbread and you can see and try them in any shape or form. For those kids who are willing to learn how to bake with their moms, this is the cookie to start with. They are mostly round in shape, but they don’t necessarily need to be. You can find them at Nuremberg Christmas Market in the shape of the heart or like a small Christmas tree.

They also can have a shape of a snowflake, little flowers, squared ones, or even hectagon like.

The most common decoration on cookies is a little bit of dark chocolate, and walnuts or almond placed in some order. That is the most common.
But, with new ages came new toppings, so now they can be found covered in white chocolate, with plane sugar and water which will give them a special glow, they can be small as the palm of a hand or as big as one’s head.

Also, they come in every color in the world, but the most famous are still those with letters or inscriptions on the cookie. Heart-shaped ones have the brightest colors, have red, white, or even golden edges, and usually white letters that may say “Ich Liebe Dich” which is “I love you”, or “Du ekelst mich am” loosely translated as “you disgust me” or other funny, or serious, but always fun to eat.

Add a small eatable heart or some small colored sugar balls on top, and you can even decorate the Christmas tree with them. Choose Nuremberg this Christmas, and the smell of fresh cookies will lead you to them.

For some time now there are a lot of people that thought that all of the three mentioned cities are different places. There are many answers, and everyone thinks that their explanation is the best.

For some time now there are a lot of people that thought that all of the three mentioned cities are different places. There are many answers, and everyone thinks that their explanation is the best.

All of the three mentioned names stated in the beginning are the same city. Nuremberg is the English way of spelling the same name of the city of Nürnberg which got its name in the early 11th century because of the name of Imperial Castle which made some sort of the middle between East Francia and Bavarian Nordgau. The English kind of spelling of the word Nuremberg comes from medieval Latin Nuremberga where we can also find relics that called this region Norimberga. This is not the only city in the world that, during the time, changed its spelling name. Those changes mostly occur in the English language, but sometimes in the same country, different cities have different names in some parts of the same state.

So we still have in the Frankish part of the state people who call Nuremberg still Närmberch as it was called many years ago. The most common answer to this difficult question is that the English language does not recognize the letter ‘ü’ so to make it easier to write or even read they changed the town’s name to Nuremberg.

There are several variations where even in the German-speaking countries where Nurnberg is an option they use it when the letter ‘ü’ can not be used in writing. The original name of Nürnberg was Noremberg and the same name was used in older books that are translated into English to describe the population and habits of people who lived there in the 1770s as well as some measures that were around in Germany in the 18th century.

Nürnberg is not the only city that had that misfortune to be called and spelled differently than its original names. In the German-speaking area, we can see Frankfurt or Frankfort misspelled in many cases, and some Scandinavian cities are written so only the locals can tell you where you should go to get to the place you want to go.

Finally, there is Nuernberg which is used only in written form but not in spoken language because they found the replacement for some letters that only the German language has. So instead of ‘ü’ they use ‘eu’ instead of just the letter ‘u’ to replace their letter so that words can be read with more ease.

However written, Nürnberg is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany and everyone should visit it if the chance occurs.

Iron Maiden of Nuremberg was one of the hardest torture devices that were made for those who got the hardest punishment. The first written trace of this torture chamber was in the 19th century in Nuremberg.
It was a chamber made of iron, made for one person, with spikes inside, so one person that was in there couldn’t move or sleep, because you could be killed with the spikes of iron inside.

Without any proof, this torture chamber was said to be a copy of the iron maiden made in the Middle Ages, but without any solidly written trace.

Iron Maiden of Nuremberg

Despite that, the Spartan people, with their King Nabis, the tyrant, had made a similar device 200 years B.C.
However, in this case, that device was used for killing people, and the one in Nuremberg was made for punishments. Later on, Ibn al-Zayyāt said that he made a wooden chamber with the same iron spikes inside, but it was used only one time, and it was for his execution.

A new torture machine was made in Germany, and from the outside don’t look like something scary. Actually, it looks more like the sarcophagus from ancient Egypt. But, when opened, there are iron spikes long enough for anyone that had to be inside had to have serious injuries. Made for the whole body, including the head, it was made to be locked from the outside.

Since it has been made in Germany, some of the museum articles, are constructed from the ones made in the early days to complete the picture of horror that was used on the people that committed the crime in 1800.
Its German name is ‘Eiserne Jungfrau’

This chamber came to light in 1802 and it was displayed in a museum in Nuremberg. Nuremberg chamber as a torture device is the only one saved completely in whole, and still stands in that museum.

Other Iron Maiden chambers are in various museums around Europe, but the flaw is that not one of them was saved in full. You can see them in separate parts, tried to put them back together, but the only one that is kept in whole is in Nuremberg.
Unfortunately, the original one was destroyed in the Second World War. It was also displayed in Nuremberg but the other one was saved and is kept as a whole.

Its original name is the ‘Nuremberg Virgin‘ , ‘Vergine di Norimberga‘ and everyone who looked at it said that it was the most disturbing torturing device ever made, and then got its new name the ‘Iron Maiden’ which better describes what the device is.
Looking at this device, one will say that this chamber is dating back as far as the middle ages. But the truth is that ‘Nuremberg Virgin’ was made originally, as we know them today, in the 19th century. But, scary as it looks, it does feel like it came from the Dark Middle Ages.

Nuremberg gets the title of having the only one original, undestroyed peace of this torture chamber, even after the Second World War it is still the only one designed to slowly kill you and no one will hear you. Spikes inside the torture were made to hurt you badly, but to also kill you as slowly as possible. Keeping in mind that everyone is different in shape or size, your being bigger could reduce your pain to a minimum.

A copy of the original ‘Iron Maiden’ was sold in 1960 and now is in capable hands in the medieval ‘Crime Museum’ or the ‘Rothenburg ob der Tauber’

The device was so popular, that some people even made stories about this device. Siebenkees was one of them. According to his story, the Iron Maiden was used on August the 14.th, 1515 to kill the man who forged coins

The first version of Iron Maiden was mad without spikes. Instead, the chamber was made with wholes instead of spikes, and people would be killed from the outside by inserting spikes or knives through the wholes. Later on, because no one would want to do this job, the chamber was made with spikes inside.

It was high 2,13 meters, and it has a Virgin Mary on the top of the chamber. The Virgin Mary was placed on top as a symbol of Christianity is which is over all the other religions.

Placed inside, people would suffer first the pain of 20 centimeters long spikes in his body, and claustrophobia for as long as you would have for the rest of his life. There are holes for eyes and mouth, and it was to the top of the cruelty because you can not suffocate, but only scream and to breathe to the end of life.

The spikes inside the chamber were positioned not to touch the main organ of the person placed inside, so the suffering will be as long as it can. The spikes went through arms, eyes, legs, buttocks, and stomach. The suffering must have been awful and painful but that is why the Iron Maden was made for.

There are many destinations in Nuremberg that you can visit, and feel like there is something better and bigger than you, but this display will leave you speechless and a bit afraid for the people that lived in those days. If you are faint-hearted if you do not want to see this chamber. The cruelty that was used in the XVIV century is not for those who have bad dreams. This is the place where the historian goes, usually with his students, and those who are Goth, and want to know in person what does it looks like when cruelty was in its last known object of scaring people.

So, if in any case, you visit Nuremberg, try to get to see what kind of cruel life was in the 1800s, be sure to visit this sooky place, that will take you to another time, when the crime was punished with the highest level of pain that human body can handle.

Geography

Bavaria

is a country of high plateaus and medium-sized mountains. In the north are basalt knolls and high plateaus; in the northwest are the wooded sandstone hills of the Spessart. The northwest is drained by the Main River, which flows into the Rhine. To the southeast the topography varies from the stratified land formations of Swabia-Franconia to shell limestone and red marl, the hill country of the Franconian-Rednitz Basin, and the limestone mountains of the Franconian Jura along the Danube, which divides Bavaria north and south.

On the eastern edge of Bavaria are the Bavarian and Bohemian forests, and in the north is the Franconian Forest. South of the Danube is a plateau upon which lies the capital, Munich, and beyond it are the Bavarian Alps. Bavaria’s share of the Alps consists of wooded peaks of several thousand feet, behind which rise steep ridges and high plateaus (in the west, the Allgäuer Alps; in the east, the Alps of Berchtesgaden). They reach their highest point with the 9,718-foot (2,962-metre) Zugspitze, which is also the highest point in Germany. Bavaria has a continental climate that is harsh for middle Europe, although there are some exceptions, such as the Lower Main valley.

Eastern summit of the Zugspitze, Germany – Hans Huber

Historically, the north has been inhabited by descendants of the Franks, the southeast by residents of old Bavarian stock, and the southwest by people of Bavarian-Swabian descent. The majority of Bavaria’s inhabitants still live in small towns. Only about one-fifth live in cities of 100,000 or more. Munich is the third largest city in Germany and the largest city in Bavaria.

Marienplatz with (centre) New Town Hall, Munich, Ger. – Brand X Pictures/Jupiterimages

After World War II there was an influx of refugees from the Sudetenland and eastern Europe, where many ethnic Germans had lived for centuries. A significant proportion of Bavaria’s population at the beginning of the 21st century was composed of those refugees and their descendants. Beginning in the 1960s, the industrial areas received large numbers of migrant workers from southern Europe.

Great changes took place in the religious composition of the population after the war, with a heavy influx of Protestants. In the early 21st century, most Bavarians were Roman Catholics, and Evangelical Lutherans were the second largest religious group.

About two-fifths of the state’s gross output in the early 21st century consisted of industrial and handicraft products. Trade, transportation, and services accounted for more than half and agriculture and forestry for only a tiny amount.

Farms in Bavaria tend to be large and highly mechanized. The Gäuboden Plain, a fertile farming basin along the southern bank of the Danube, is known as the granary of Bavaria. Rye, wheat, and barley take up about half of the farmland; much of the rest is planted with other grains and feed crops….
