What is the perfect Christmas holiday? To enjoy the moment in #Nuremberg and forget about your worries for a while. Whether strolling through the Christmas Market, enjoying medieval atmosphere in the Old Town or shopping individual gifts for your friends and family. If you are interested in culture, a visit to one of the many museums in town is a must. These are memories that will last a lifetime! [more…] Nuremberg Christmas Market – christkindlesmarkt.de

From a window of the Church of Our Lady ( Frauenkirche ) , an angel with flowing blond curls, a crown, and golden wings, appears above the Nuremberg market and proclaims: “the Christkind invites you to her market, and whoever comes is welcome!”

Tradition as old as 400 years, gets together over 2.000.000 people every single year around the Christmas. Instead of Santa Claus, there is a Christmas angel, and by their tradition, she is the one that opens and welcomes all the guests, but not only that, she has so much to do around these days. But first, a bit of history.

Nuremberg Christmas market : Nürnberg

The Nuremberg Christmas market – one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany.

Tradition says that a new Angel is chosen every 2 years. It’s always a young pretty lady, with a smile on her face, always ready to be with children and to try to listen to them all. She wears the same traditional gown, but, because the costume is made out of real gold, the stars on the gown are changed every 2 years.

When she opens the Nuremberg Christmas market, then she reads to the children and talks to them almost the whole day, gathering their Christmas wishlists, trying to promise them all to get what they want. She has her own charette with horses so that everyone can see her, no matter how long you stay, if you came here for Christmas activities, you’ll see her for sure.

Looking from above, from The Church of Our Lady, where the angels welcome you, the view is something else. Except for a lot of people down below the terrace, you can see red and white stripes which are covering the whole square, and streets around it.

Having in mind that so many people are coming, it’s not too much when you hear that there is about 180 stand that sells everything that is connected to the Christmas and this great town! Except that, there are international stands from Poland, China, Scandinavian countries, and also from other parts of the country.

Christkindlesmarkt is a Nuremberg Christmas market that is held annually in Nuremberg. It takes place during Advent in the Hauptmarkt, the central square in Nuremberg’s old town, and in adjoining squares and streets.

If by now you are not convinced, remember that this is the place to be for Christmas, and there are more than one reason why should you?

First, the smells, where everything smells like roasting almonds, gingerbread cookies in all shapes and sizes, bratwurst ( the Geman sausage ), and the traditionally prepared mulled wine, with its seasonings, ads a funny note to the whole story. The wine is cooked with cider, honey, cinnamon, star anise, and orange peel…and all that in one place, and in one hot mug.

Their gingerbread cookies are famous by having a lot of nuts in them, and that separates those cookies, from the other in different parts of the country.

The first one of the Christmas market was held about year 1628., from which there is a Christmas box in the National Museum of Nuremberg, and in it is still 12 silk skeins ( a length of thread, yarn or silk in this case, loosely coiled and knotted ), so at that time, it was celebrated.

Besides the decorations for the Christmas tree, there are so many things to find here, on the marketplace, and stuff to do that you have to go and see for yourself. For example, there are whole day children care, where kids can do all kind of stuff, from making things out of the glass to making cookies with elders to dipping candles into the barrels with colour, thus painting the candles themselves.

Beside those children, who got more time, can stay and make small houses, and decorating them, in Christmas children bakery, there is also the children post office, and a puppet theatre. Everything a child may need in this jungle of glitter.

The things that must be mentioned about this great gathering of people is that the Nuremberg’s Chrismas Market was moved around several times, from the Insel Schütt which is a small island on the river Pegnitz, to the Plato of the Museum of Applied Arts, then there was a movement to the Transport Museum, which had enough space in those days to get all people around.

There is a sentence from St. Sebald Church which says that Christmas sermon was cancelled in 1616. because everyone was on the Christmas Marketplace, so they had to change the date of the beginning of the Christmas Market. Today, the whole thing starts on the 4.th of December, so everyone can enjoy both Christmas Market and Church Sermon for the Christmas Eve.

From 1545. they got after the reformation of the Church, for the children of Nuremberg are having their presents from “Holy Christkind”.
In 1933. The Nuremberg Christmas Market was back on the main square, in front of the Church Of Our Lady, and since then its still at the same place.

Everything from ornaments, for the tree, to the Christmas Angel made by hand in gold leaves, can make a great present for you or for someone who you love, you’ll find just about everything here for your comfy stay there until you get back, you’ll feel like living in a fairytale.

If you like Christmas and enjoy festivities that are great, marry, shiny and traditional, you won’t regret deciding the City of Nuremberg for the Christmas holiday!

the night before Christmas, is a magical time across the world, filled with traditions and festivities that vary from place to place. In the heart of Germany, one city stands out for its enchanting and centuries-old Christmas Eve celebration—Nuremberg. Nuremberg Christmas Eve on “Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt” as it is known in German, is a holiday experience like no other. Let’s delve into the history, charm, and traditions of this iconic Christmas market.

A Rich History:

The roots of the Nuremberg Christmas market can be traced back to the early 17th century. In 1628, it was officially mentioned as a “Kindles-Marck” (a market for children) and has been a cherished tradition ever since. The market, however, has evolved significantly while preserving its historic character.

Setting the Stage:

The Nuremberg Christmas Eve market typically opens in late November and lasts until December 24, offering visitors an entire month to bask in its charm. The venue for this yuletide spectacle is the Hauptmarkt, the central square in the city. Framed by the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) and the iconic Schoener Brunnen fountain, it’s a picture-perfect setting.

The Christkind:

At the heart of the Nuremberg Christmas Eve market is the Christkind, the Christ Child. This angelic figure, usually portrayed by a local young woman, officially opens the market with a prologue in the early evening hours of the market’s first day. Dressed in an ethereal white and gold robe with a crown of candles, the Christkind exudes a magical presence. She delivers a heartwarming speech, capturing the spirit of Christmas.

The Treasures of the Market:

Visitors are treated to a cornucopia of Christmas delights at the market. Stroll through rows of beautifully decorated stalls, showcasing handcrafted wooden ornaments, exquisite gingerbread cookies, and delightful Christmas decorations. The Nuremberg Zwetschgenmännle, or prune people, are unique, handcrafted figures made from prunes and walnuts.

Gastronomic Delights:

Nuremberg is famous for its culinary offerings, and the Christmas market is no exception. Sample the city’s renowned Nuremberg sausages, traditionally served three-in-a-bun with sauerkraut and a dollop of mustard. Roasted almonds, mulled wine, and Lebkuchen, a type of gingerbread, are also must-try treats.

The Glow of Candlelight:

As night falls, the market comes alive with the warm, inviting glow of candles and twinkling lights. Stroll through the stalls, savoring the aroma of roasted chestnuts, and listen to Christmas carols performed by local choirs. The market’s atmosphere is pure enchantment.

Nuremberg Christmas Eve is a sensory feast, immersing visitors in the spirit of the season. The city’s commitment to preserving its traditions while offering something new every year makes it a unique and magical destination for anyone seeking the true essence of Christmas. With its historical significance, vibrant market, and welcoming atmosphere, Nuremberg offers a Christmas experience that’s hard to rival.

For some time now there are a lot of people that thought that all of the three mentioned cities are different places. There are many answers, and everyone thinks that their explanation is the best.

For some time now there are a lot of people that thought that all of the three mentioned cities are different places. There are many answers, and everyone thinks that their explanation is the best.

All of the three mentioned names stated in the beginning are the same city. Nuremberg is the English way of spelling the same name of the city of Nürnberg which got its name in the early 11th century because of the name of Imperial Castle which made some sort of the middle between East Francia and Bavarian Nordgau. The English kind of spelling of the word Nuremberg comes from medieval Latin Nuremberga where we can also find relics that called this region Norimberga. This is not the only city in the world that, during the time, changed its spelling name. Those changes mostly occur in the English language, but sometimes in the same country, different cities have different names in some parts of the same state.

So we still have in the Frankish part of the state people who call Nuremberg still Närmberch as it was called many years ago. The most common answer to this difficult question is that the English language does not recognize the letter ‘ü’ so to make it easier to write or even read they changed the town’s name to Nuremberg.

There are several variations where even in the German-speaking countries where Nurnberg is an option they use it when the letter ‘ü’ can not be used in writing. The original name of Nürnberg was Noremberg and the same name was used in older books that are translated into English to describe the population and habits of people who lived there in the 1770s as well as some measures that were around in Germany in the 18th century.

Nürnberg is not the only city that had that misfortune to be called and spelled differently than its original names. In the German-speaking area, we can see Frankfurt or Frankfort misspelled in many cases, and some Scandinavian cities are written so only the locals can tell you where you should go to get to the place you want to go.

Finally, there is Nuernberg which is used only in written form but not in spoken language because they found the replacement for some letters that only the German language has. So instead of ‘ü’ they use ‘eu’ instead of just the letter ‘u’ to replace their letter so that words can be read with more ease.

However written, Nürnberg is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany and everyone should visit it if the chance occurs.

Resolution of the Nuremberg City Council

In light of the confrontation between Israel and the Hamas in Palestine, anti-Semitic statements and elements are being expressed in previously unimaginable ways in many cities throughout the Federal Republic of Germany. Unfortunately, this has also happened in Nuremberg. In reaction, the City Council has passed a resolution in its meeting on July 23, 2014, condemning all forms of anti-Semitic agitation.

The Zeppelin Field at the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg is a very special national heritage. As debates about the refurbishment of the severly damaged relics of the place are also of international interest, you will find the English version of the comprehensive brochure about the project for download here.

Nuremberg airport got its name from one of the most important people in art in this city. It’s called ‘Albrecht Durer Flughafen Nürnberg‘ or the Albert Durer airport of Nuremberg. This is one of the International airports and one of the most important for travelers to the cargo that contains all kinds of goods. It connects major cities all around the world.

With 4,2 million passengers managed in 2017, this airport is the 10th airport by size and transporting people in Germany. Made after the Second World War, it was finished in 1955. It is located about 5 km from the center of the town and it has a great connection to the city center or any way you want to go.

If you are just passing through Nuremberg, it is the place to get to the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean Sea, and Egypt. There will be fewer crowds at the airport so you don’t need to wait as long as you would at most airports in Germany. In 1997/98, Air Berlin moved major flights during the winter cluster for those passengers that are only passing through Germany. This is the second-largest airport in the world that is being used for transferring tourists from Germany to other countries.

Back in the 1960s, there were over 100.000 passengers, when they decided to make the runway much longer than it was at the time. They predict that this number of people will only be longer.

The runway 10/20 is long 2,700 by 45 meters wide. Control tower center merges with Nuremberg’s metro station in 1999. That way passengers can get to the center of the city in the fastest way. In 2002 the departure hall was extended and not long after that, the storage place was extended too and now it is 4.600 square meters.

To this day it is enough, but due to common and widely used, it may widen again in the near future. This airport can handle 39 planes at one time. All of them can be parked here, and it still will be places for other airplanes.
In 2009 was added 8.500 square meters of sorting luggage space was added to the airport, fully automated for sorting all kinds of luggage from all parts of the world.

After making the runway longer and wider, here now can take off and land all types of plains even cargo plains and the Boeing 747 which is one of the larger plains in the world. On the other hand, this airport still doesn’t have a license for plains like Airbus A380. Every year the number of people that come here is getting bigger so the runway was gradually renovated along with taxiways that were added in 2009. Along with that there was added drainage from rain, electrical cables made safer, and the fire-path made for safe emergency exit.

At the airport, they have 40 desks, where everyone will be more than glad to help the passenger with whatever they need. Having over 5 million passengers during the year, this airport is ready for everything. Passengers terminal had just one but with the number of people which is decreasing, the city had to make the other terminal.

Airport Nuernberg, CC BY-SA 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Then was made those 40 check-ins desk for a large number of passengers.
That is why the U-Bahn or the metro comes through here and goes to the center of Nuremberg every 10 minutes. If you want to rent a car, there is only 5 km that will get you to the center of the city. Bus number 30 is also the option and the other number 33, that will lead you straight to the city, without circling around the whole town.

Cargo Center Nuremberg was added in 1987. It was necessary to make Cargo Center after the crush of the Soviet Union when the Nuremberg airport was once again made the center of Europe for landing a large number of flights for the people as well as for the cargo airplanes. With that in mind over 150.000 companies use this airport for economic reasons. But the economy is not the only reason why companies choose to land here. The city of Nuremberg had the best-organized junction near the airport to the railway and land traffic and highways. With more than 40 percent is approximately export that goes through this part of Germany.

With that number of flights, they had to make Cargo Center II. Now there are 13.317 square meters of space for the storage of all kinds of goods and services. Also, there is 7.000 square meter of office spaces and the absolute record was 2010 when there was 107.123 tons of cargo.
The Control Tower of this airport is 48 meters high. That change was needed because the old tower was only 18 meters high.
Being seen from far away this airport is also one of the landmarks of the city of Nuremberg. Great in architecture, the Nuremberg airport is best seen when the airplane takes out in the sky.

Where is the Airport?

Here is the location of Nuremberg Airport:

The second one is ‘UrlauberParken’ or the holiday parking space and the third option is Valet Parking that offers many more than you should hope for, but it tells a story that everyone here is more than welcome in the city of Nuremberg.
Valet parking includes services like cleaning and washing your car, while you are away, the offer car maintenance and for those who are afraid of being robbed, they have a service for safekeeping customer’s goods.

Airline’s trough Nuremberg

We don’t need to mention that every surface there is spotlessly clean, so you don’t need to worry much about who was sitting in your seat before you. If traveling with kids, there is a Hotel at the airport where bigger families can take a longer rest, according to their traveling flights. This place is so big, that you can have a conference and you can have rooms for those who can not get back to their land on the same day.

If you are waiting for a shorter time, you can have a small snack, but if you are really hungry, some people say that this airport has one of the best restaurants in the whole city. From sandwiches to REVE to go, where you can also find other kinds of snacks and salads. Good restaurant food you can find at Terminal90.

If you get to go to Nuremberg to spend the long weekend or your whole holiday, the best time to do it is during Christmas Holidays. This is a special and magical time of the year, and everyone wants to be here during their magnificent celebration. These winter Christmas Holidays are being canceled due to Covid-19, and it’s the first time from the 16th century, except from the two wars that happen here. But it is not the only time of the year when you can have a great time spending a holiday. If you come during the summer you will also have a great time.

Note: Today, hopefully not for much longer, due to Covid-19 every passenger has to have a negative Corona Test, and the temperature is taken on the spot before you enter this airport.

‘Nürnberger Prozesse’ or Nuremberg Trials

Nuremberg Trials were held from 1945 to 1949. This court was organized much earlier because the Allied Forces were convinced that together, can win World War II. Among those forces were the United States of America, the former Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom.
Allied Trials were being covered by international law as well as the laws of war. On trial were the most prominent people that served under the ‘ Nazi Germany’, including the leaders, people from justice, economy and doctors during the war, and especially military staff.

The court was named International Military Tribunal and there were held trials for those who organized and executed the most gruesome crimes ever imagined. From then on, ‘The Holocaust’ was the shorter name for all that was done to people that weren’t by their standards.
In the earlier days, before the war began, bit by bit Germans turned to Hitler’s leadership, and the first target was Jews. After them, came the Gipsy people until the limit was so narrow that you had to have blue hair, and blue eyes, the perfect symmetry of the face, trying to make an inferior race which will one day ruled the whole world.

Nuremberg trials intended to punish all of those who made the concentration camps and killing everyone that didn’t have the right name, face, and last name. Some of the Germans had to prove several generations before them, were German by birth. Most of the people who could predict such a chain of events left Germany in hurry, but most of them had no means to leave. Most of their hiding places were found and would be killed on the spot, along with those who helped them hide.

The leader of the Nazi Party Adolf Hitler ( 1889 – 1945 ) killed himself along with his wife, and few other generals by poising, some speculate that he shoots himself so the Allied army wouldn’t catch him. He didn’t want to face the justice that came for almost all of them who were his followers.

The Nuremberg Trials had 13 separate series of trials. Also, this was the first trial against the crimes of humanity, and genocide, and it was the first example of how to deal with people that committed those crimes.

Hitler gain power and was chancellor of Germany in 1933. For the whole decade, he and his Nazi Party worked on prosecuting German Jews until the beginning of the Second World War in 1939. At that time, everything was ready for concentration camps, and for killing all the non-German people. Until the last moment, the German Nazi Party believed that they will win the war and that there will not be any consequences for the crimes committed.

In those camps were killed over 6 million Jews and 4 to 6 million people of the that weren’t Jews. In 1942 Allied Forces made the first declaration of the mass killing of people. Wanting to prosecute those who made the Holocaust they made the European Jewry which will prosecute those who weren’t killed or got away, usually to the United States.

Nuremberg Trials were an important step in the history of the world because from that trial to this day, not only that punishment was for the people, but for the whole states, like in this case, the Head o the State must be punished for the Crimes Against Humanity.

When the Nuremberg Trial started there were 199 people on the convict bench. Almost every one of them told the jury that they don’t recognize this court but it was in vain. From those 199 people, 161 was convicted and 37 of them got the death penalty. Only one of them, Hermann Goering, killed himself in his prison cell with arsenic that he got by being good to the guard that was in front of his cell the whole time. He did it in the evening of the hanging.

When the process was over, only three of the defendants were released, one got absentia, and those who weren’t sentenced to death got from 10 years in prison to the life sentence.

Hanging by death was executed on October, 16th 1946. Soviet leader at that time was Joseph Stalin proposed at the time that every soldier should be killed which was approximately 50 to 100 thousand people, including all, from the higher officers to the soldiers who only followed orders.

On the other hand, there was Winston Churchill which was Prime Minister of Great Britain at the time, had a proposition that all of the participants of the war should be killed without trial. He was pressured by the U.S.A. leaders that the trial was necessary.
More important was that the real trial will be written and would have evidence of the trial and punishments that followed.

Everything from the beginning to the end of the trial was documented, and transcripts of the trials were saved, and everyone can read them, even online. Transcripts were named ‘The Blue Series’ and it is made of 42 Volumes. Who has the time can read it from the first day of trial to the last one.

In the earlier years, every country held trials from World War I, but it was each country for itself. This trial, however, was made of the Allies which included the London Charter and International Military Tribunal. They got together on August the 8th, 1945. They separated three types of crimes including crimes against peace, including planning and executing war plans, war crimes, including violation of war laws and treatment of civilians, and the third one were crimes against humanity, including murders, the deportation of civilians to prison camps, forcible imprisonment of people and prosecution on religious, political, racial grounds and other things.

Since it was an open court, not only the jury got to be there, but was also open for the public. The main prosecutor was Robert H. Jackson, and he had an opening statement that went over many hours. During that time, the jury among the public, who barely could frit in the courtroom, were everyone was quiet, but the truth was told and impression on the people’s faces was enough. The first impression was too much for some people, some even went away from the trial because they couldn’t believe what they just heard.

The opening statement went from the 21st of November, 1945.
Chronologically on the 26th, the same month, The Hossbach Memorandum was presented to the jury which contained plans for war and after the winning of the war plans for Great Germany and was written in 1937 and presented to the highest-ranking officers. They were on the top of the chain of command in the Nazi Party.

On November the 29th, the same year, while the motion picture was still black and white, the movie of the people who were in the camps and the Nazi prisons was played in full. The room was quiet for the duration of the whole recorded material. To this day, some of the pictures are being seen, no one can believe that it happens, but it did, and there are still some of the old people wear the tattooed numbers on their hands because most of the prisoners were treated like animals, not human beings.

Barbed wires were all around camps, and their prisons were in every country which they conquered. From behind the barbed wire were pale faces of people who were so thin, that every single bone on their bodies could be seen from not that far away.
One of the accused, named Ervin von Lahousen took a stand and said that Keitel and von Ribbentrop were the first ones that gave the order of killing the Poles, Jewes, and Russians.

That was one of the first confessions given by the leading officers that committed monstrous crimes during The Second World War. Then, many others gave statements, from which one of them even admitted that he was the one that gave the order of killing 90.000 Jews and Russian prisoners.

Then came January the 28th, 1946 when the statement gave a girl from French Resistance named Marie-Claude Valliant-Couturier. She survived the concentration camp and the first one to testify about the Holocaust and the gruesome things she witnessed. Many others after her testified against the Holocaust and Nazi Party and everything that happened from 1939 to 1945. Among other witnesses, there were played two documentary movies that were described to the fullest things that happen in the whole world during those years.

The prosecutors were brutal in their honesty, and that lead to the successful ending of the trial. Finishing statements were given for several days and was ended on August the 31th, and two months after that court adjourned once again for sentencing. The jury voted from October 30 to the 1st November it took them only two days to convict all accused. The fact was that in World War II died over 50 million people, and that is just in Europe. All documentation was saved for future people to remember that something like this should never happen again.

It’s an ornament, spin-driven watch made for those who had enough money to buy it for themselves, or as a present for the loved ones.

The hardest part to make from this little clock was the torsion pendulum, which on a big scale was in every clock in those time, but to make it that small to fit someone’s pocket was real magic during those days. The first clock made to work like that was big as a part of the closet, but only in Nuremberg were trying to make it that small it could fit as a pendulum over the neck, and not look too big.

Making of “Nuremberg eggs” was a hard task because everything in it had to be made as minimum as possible but still had to work by winding once or in the best case twice a day.

At that time Nuremberg’s clockmaker was Peter Henlein who lived to 1542, but he made the smallest clock for those days in 1505 to 1510 when it was finished, and there were only small outside changes, but inside it was real work of art, making the parts that small that can fit on a thin golden chain that was around the neck.

For those times, the wind-up clock was a brand new thing, but there were small wind-up clocks that were made almost a century ago. In 1430 the Duke nicknamed Phillip The God ordered the smallest possible clock for himself, but it was a different shape and bigger in size.
Not only that, but the clock could only tell just hours, but not the minutes, thus giving you the approximate time in one hour.
For those days it was a real picture of the wealth of one person, and a memory for the of someone dear to you with a lot of money to buy it for you.

In those days in Nuremberg were made in three ways.
One was cylindrically shaped, named ‘Dosenuhr’ made for carrying in the purse or leaving at the table in the centre of it.
The other one was a flat cylindrical wind-up clock made for carrying around the neck, or around one’s hand, with a chin of gold that could support it. Some times, it was on a cord and hidden from prying eyes to keep a hidden memory of someone, and it was not shared with everyone.

The third one was made like a sphere, especially small watches for around the neck of a wrist, named ‘Bisamapfeluhr’ and they looked like pomanders, so it would look more like a pendant than a clock.

Not only that these clocks are a real mystery because of the technology for those days, but they are also really rare to find or see, even in some major museums there is no trace of them, despite that they were really popular in the 1580s. But when in Nuremberg, there is a wast collection of these clocks, from really round ones, that look more like a small ball rather than an egg, to those so small that anyone would be amazed to see the miniature clock from 16th century, and it would be an honour having one of them in the museum near you.

The word Eierlein means ‘small eggs’, so the real Nuremberg small eggs were most times oval-shaped, like a real small egg.
To these days no one knows who made such small parts for these tiny clocks, or who made the tools that tiny, that could make and complete this small clock, from which some of them still work.

The inventor of these small egg clocks was Peter Henlein who was a locksmith in Nuremberg. The invention of these small clocks is considered as the first wrist-worn clocks in history. The actual name egg clock was presented later at the end of the 16th century ( around 1580 ) because then they were widely used around the whole country, but the first one cylindrical clock was made in 1530 in Nuremberg.

Sadly, like most of the artists, Henlein was dead for more than 30 years, when his egg clocks became famous. By forgetting the artist who made those clocks went more than enough time for his name to be forgotten, and to use something that clock actually looks like, thus the name, the egg clock.

Also, the first clock that you can carry to another place, not that small, but still smaller than big clocks that go sometimes to the roof, was made by the same man in 1510, and his first written sale of one of smallest clocks is in 1524. It was gilded Pomander which is a special perfume-box that looked just like it, only it was a small gilded clock.

It cost 15 guldens and it was sold to the city of Nuremberg. Today we know that clocks like that, the pomander watch does not exist anymore, there are left just 2 of them and both are in museums. One dates from 1505 and the other is from 1524 and the one that Henlein made in 1524 is now in Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.

The only sure thing is that no one knows how did they make such small clocks, that worked, with such small parts that most of them were smaller than 5 millimetres. From the whole 16th century until today it stays a mystery.
